The registration process of the GATE 2027 has been delayed again and thousands of engineering and science aspirants are waiting for the application window to open. The exam is organised by IIT Madras which had already announced the online application process for August 27, 2026. But the application portal did not become active as planned. The official GATE 2027 website now indicates that the opening date will be announced soon.
The delay comes after GATE 2027 registration had already been postponed from its original date. Applications were supposed to begin on August 14, 2026. IIT Madras subsequently changed the starting date to August 27. Now the candidates would have to wait for a new announcement from the organizing institute on the new date. The website currently lists the GOAPS opening date as “TBA” and some other dates are also on the schedule.
The regular application deadline without a late fee is September 27, 2026 according to the last schedule of GATE 2027. If candidates miss the regular application deadline they will be able to submit their forms with a late fee until October 5, 2026. Since the registration opening date has been changed again, candidates should wait for IIT Madras to verify whether these closing dates will remain or be amended as well.
The application correction window will be open on October 14 and will remain available until October 21, 2026. The city allotment notification is on January 4, 2027. The GATE 2027 examination itself will take place on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. The dates are subject to change and candidates are advised to consult the official GATE 2027 website for the final timetable.
GATE is a national-level examination used for postgraduate programmes (M.Tech, M.E. and PhD courses) at many top institutions. GATE scores are also taken into account by a range of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment. So any change in the registration schedule is very important for students who are planning for postgraduate admission or planning to use GATE scores for career purposes.
The additional waiting period should also allow for preparing the information and documents for registration. Applicants are required to fill in personal details, academic information, a recent photograph, signature and any identity or category documents. Candidates belonging to the eligible categories should have the relevant certificates ready and ensure that the information entered in the application form matches their official records.
GATE 2027 has brought some significant changes. IIT Madras has introduced Robotics and Automation as a new test paper. Also, the registration process includes DigiLocker integration for Indian candidates. Aspirants are required to read the latest instructions before starting the application process once the portal is active.
The test will be conducted in computer-based mode over a number of sessions. Candidates should monitor the paper combinations, eligibility requirements and examination guidelines before submitting their applications, and since application dates have been revised multiple times, one must avoid using previous data circulating on social media and coaching websites.
For now, candidates should regularly check the official GATE 2027 portal for the revised registration announcement. IIT Madras is expected to publish the new application start date once the portal is ready. The deadline announced thus far should be treated as provisional and the opening date and other schedule details can be changed.
The latest development is especially important for candidates who had already prepared their documents expecting applications to open on August 27. Rather than sit by passively, aspirants can use this window to check their academic records, prepare the necessary documents and study the GATE 2027 syllabus and exam pattern. This can help them get those documents done as soon as registration begins and reduce the chances of errors or last-minute technical issues.
Candidates should also keep in mind that the official website currently marks the registration opening date as “TBA”. So any new application start date should not be confirmed until IIT Madras officially updates the GATE 2027 schedule. Once these new date changes are announced, the registration timeline for all applicants will be set.
