The fire broke out in an electrical shop in Halebidu, a historic town in Belur taluk and home to heritage monuments and a bustling local market. Initial information suggests the fire started because of a short circuit inside the electrical system of the shop.

Flames quickly spread through the premises, engulfing the electrical shop within minutes. Electrical materials, wires, cables, appliances, and other combustible items stored in the establishment were all caught up in the flames, as was the electrical supply.

The affected building belongs to Govindegowda, while the electrical shop was operated by Kantaraj. As the flames continued to spread, thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the building.

Locals rushed to the scene and tried to fight the fire with what they had available before the firefighters arrived on the scene. But the fire was so bad and the materials inside the shop so combustible and hazardous that they couldn’t contain it. Residents were forced to flee the fire quickly, witnesses said.

The situation worsened when the flames spread from the electrical shop into the adjoining businesses. Many of the neighbouring shops suffered different degrees of damage due to the heat, smoke, and spreading fire, the fire chief said.

As news of the incident reached law enforcement, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department rushed to the scene with firefighting equipment. Firefighters immediately began to work to keep the blaze from spreading and also save neighbouring buildings from getting engulfed by the flames.

Firefighting operations went on for several hours as teams battled the flames. With the firefighters working through the firefighting operation for several hours, they were able to manage the situation and prevent what could have resulted in a much worse disaster in the densely populated area.

Fortunately, no casualties or serious injuries have been reported so far. But there are going to be a lot of financial losses, as a significant quantity of electrical goods and equipment stored inside the shop was destroyed.

Police officials from the Halebidu Police Station visited and made a preliminary inspection. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be collected on the cause of the fire and will be determined in the next few days.

Approximately several lakhs of rupees worth of goods were burnt to ashes in the incident, according to initial estimates. Shop owners in the area said they were shocked about the losses and that their shops should do more to ensure electrical safety measures in commercial businesses.

Electrical short circuits are still one of the most common causes of commercial fires and are considered especially significant in shops with large quantities of electrical products and wiring materials. Regular maintenance of electrical systems, proper insulation, and safety inspections are necessary.

The Halebidu fire teaches us that we need to be prepared for fire safety and that electrical safety standards must be closely monitored and enforced. There will be an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and whether there were any safety failures that led to this incident.

And shop owners in those areas are now assessing the damage at the shop and starting the long recovery process after the terrible fire.
