One wild elephant died after it came in contact with a live electric wire in Hassan district, with residents and wildlife officials in charge of wildlife in worry. It happened at Kogile Mane village in Belur taluk, within the Arehalli police station’s jurisdiction.
As of now, a herd of wild elephants had entered the area looking for food. They are believed to have moved through agricultural land in the village, and one of them came across an electric wire that had fallen inside a farmer’s field.
The deceased animal was a female elephant aged around 35 years.
Elephant Dies On The Spot
The elephant’s trunk was also struck by the fallen electric wire. The animal died instantly from an electric shock,” a witness said.
The carcass of the large female elephant was then observed in the agricultural field, and information was sent to the authorities.
The death has raised concerns over the safety of wildlife in areas where elephant herds often move through agricultural land in search of food and water.
Forest Officials Rush To The Spot
After learning of the incident, Forest Department officials rushed to Kogile Mane village to check the location.
The elephant’s death will be investigated, as well as the condition and origin of the fallen power line, officials will look at. Further investigation will also look at whether the wire had broken accidentally or there were other factors involved.
