Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy has launched a sharp political attack on the Karnataka government over the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) recruitment process and called for the removal of Minister Priyank Kharge. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Thursday, Kumaraswamy said the recruitment system was failing, and corruption and manipulation flourished.
Kumaraswamy also referred to recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on complaints that government posts were being sold for large sums of money. The allegations, he said, indicate a larger problem in the recruitment system and questioned the state government’s handling of the investigation.
One of Kumaraswamy’s claims was that an aspirant had stated that ₹80 lakh was demanded to secure a veterinary doctor’s post through the commission. The evidence, if proven through investigation, would show the very serious financial scale of the alleged recruitment malpractice. But the claims remain allegations and would need to be established through due legal and investigative processes.
Kumaraswamy also questioned the circumstances of a key examination controller who, according to his allegations, was allowed to abscond while the investigation was going on. The Union Minister claimed that in the absence of strong action taken against officials accused of the action, the government was protecting individuals related to the conflict.
Karnataka’s KPSC recruitment dispute has become another big political flashpoint. Recruitment exams for government jobs are closely watched as thousands of candidates prepare for competitive exams. Any accusation of question paper manipulation, bribery, favouritism or irregular selection can lead to low self-confidence among aspirants.
Kumaraswamy used the issue to question Karnataka government claims of transparency and administrative reforms. He alleged the government cannot simultaneously claim clean governance and allow individuals suspected of wrongdoing to escape accountability.

The Union Minister also brought up earlier controversies surrounding Priyank Kharge’s tenure as Rural Development Minister in the Siddaramaiah-led government. Kumaraswamy also mentioned the selection process for Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) positions as well as questions on the recruitment process and claimed that candidates who faced questions on the recruitment process were protected.
His criticism was framed as a larger political argument against the state government. Kumaraswamy alleged that the administration had failed to demonstrate the transparency expected in government recruitment and claimed that officials responsible for irregularities were being shielded.
“On the one hand, they claim to bring transparency to the administration; on the other hand, they are protecting culprits and helping them escape,” Kumaraswamy said, demanding Kharge’s resignation.
The demand has added to political pressure on Priyank Kharge, the Karnataka government’s most powerful politician. The allegations against the minister are political and do not in themselves constitute personal wrongdoing. Any responsibility or criminal liability would have to be determined through the relevant investigations and legal proceedings.
The situation is especially sensitive as government recruitment has become a political issue in Karnataka. It is very important for young people looking for public sector jobs to be fair and transparently competitive in those exams. Any allegation of receiving public sector posts through payments will have a very negative effect on public confidence.
Central investigative agencies have raised the political temperature further. ED searches and investigations can also lead to financial transactions, intermediaries and other aspects of alleged recruitment-related corruption under scrutiny. The findings of investigators will be crucial for determining the extent of the alleged irregularities and identifying those responsible.
So for Karnataka, the first thing the Karnataka government will have to do as part of the first step is to prove that the recruitment process is being conducted independently and that anyone guilty will be prosecuted as per law and therefore will be awarded appropriate legal action. But authorities will have to ensure that genuine candidates will not be unfairly affected by the controversy and that the controversy will not do harm to them.
The KPSC issue for opposition leaders is yet another opportunity to question the government’s administrative record. Kumaraswamy’s call for Kharge’s resignation shows the state’s political war over recruitment transparency and accountability.
The controversy also shows that competitive examinations need to be more secure too. Digital monitoring, secure examination procedures, transparent evaluation systems, independent oversight and strict action against intermediaries involved in bribery can help protect the credibility of recruitment institutions.
As the investigation continues, allegations of financial transactions, the role of officials and intermediaries, and the process of recruitment are likely to be the focus of the investigation. The quality of the evidence by which Kumaraswamy alleged such things will be investigated and will now be the basis of whether they are charged or taken into account by the investigating agencies.
As the years have passed, we have seen more and more political confrontation, and Kumaraswamy is demanding that Priyank Kharge step down because he does not take any action against corruption in government recruitment.
And so the KPSC issue is no longer just about questions of recruitment exams. It has become a bigger political argument regarding transparency, accountability, and the credibility of Karnataka’s government recruitment system. With investigations ongoing, in the coming days we can expect more revelations and pressure on the state government to explain how the alleged irregularities occurred and what steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
