A 77-year-old doctor from Himachal Pradesh has taken the extraordinary decision to donate his movable and immovable assets, which are estimated to be worth more than Rs 100 crore, to the state government. Dr Rajendra Kanwar, a resident of Jolaspad in Nadaun, has also pledged his body for medical education after his death.
The doctor said he had satisfied his responsibilities and had no remaining personal ambitions. He and his late wife had decided in their lifetime that their accumulated wealth should eventually be used for the benefit of society.
People and officials are so grateful, and the Himachal Pradesh government recognised the donation as an example of public service and generosity.
Property Transferred to Government
Dr Kanwar had announced in 2021 that he would donate his movable and immovable property to the government.
On August 5, 2026, the process was formally taken forward, and the property was transferred in the name of the state government and registered for the benefit of Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur.
The donated assets include a two-storey bungalow, around five kanal and five marla of land, jewellery worth several crores, vehicles, furniture and bank deposits.
Based on the current market values of the assets, the total value of the assets is estimated to exceed Rs 100 crore.
The property is located near a medical college under construction in the Jolaspar area. Dr Kanwar therefore considered that transferring the assets to the government and linking them to the medical college would allow the property to be used for a larger public purpose.
Body Donated for Medical Education
Besides his donation of property, Dr Kanwar has also decided to donate his body after his death.
He gave written consent to the Department of Anatomy at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur and received an identity card confirming his commitment.
His body will be made available for the study and training of medical students after his death, according to his wishes.
The decision is for medical education, and it also offers future doctors the chance to learn human anatomy in the course of their medical education.
Property could help in Healthcare and Social Welfare
Dr Kanwar has expressed a desire for the donated assets to be used for people in need.
We can create an old-age home, an orphanage and a specialised healthcare facility. He also wants a facility on the donated property named ‘Krishna Rajendra’ in memory of his late wife.
The proposed use will ensure that the wealth that the couple accrued in their lives will continue to benefit the community.
Dr Kanwar had also thought about the location of the property near the medical college, and it may be valuable to healthcare and education infrastructure.
They had planned to donate to each other.
Dr Kanwar's late wife, Krishna Kanwar, worked in the education department for around 32 years and retired in 2011 as Principal of the Government Senior Secondary School in Bada.
She died on December 6, 2020
Before she died, the couple had discussed giving their property to society. This decision has now been carried forward by Dr Kanwar.
The proposed name Krishna Rajendra would be a lasting tribute to the common vision that they shared and her work in public education.
33 Years of Government Medical Service
Dr Rajendra Kanwar began his government medical career on January 3, 1977, when he joined the Health Department as a medical officer.
He served the government for approximately 33 years before retiring in 2010 as a senior doctor from the Primary Health Centre at Kangu.
Even after retirement, he continued to treat patients from his home at relatively low fees. Locally, he is known as the “Kangu doctor.”
He still gives people medical assistance at the age of 77, and this new donation is just a continuation of his long association with public healthcare.
Administration Confirms Property Transfer
Nadaun Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nishant Sharma confirmed the gift deed and said that people willing to devote such substantial personal wealth to society are rare.
According to the official, the transfer of the land has been registered in the name of the state government for Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur.
The government has also been recorded as the owner of the property in the relevant revenue records.
Dr Kanwar has informed the local administration about his wishes and expressed his desire to meet Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu personally to explain his and his late wife's vision for the property.
Chief Minister Praises the Gesture
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised Dr Kanwar for the decision and said that it was an example of sacrifice and commitment to public welfare.
The Chief Minister said donating the lifelong earnings and assets accumulated by Dr Kanwar and his late wife was a significant contribution to society.
Sukhu also paid tribute to the late Krishna Kanwar and said that the couple’s decision would help keep her memory alive for future generations.
The donation by the 77-year-old doctor has thus become a measure of how one’s own wealth can be spent on healthcare, education and social welfare.
With the property now transferred to the government and the body donation formally pledged for medical education, Dr Kanwar's decision is expected to leave a lasting legacy in Hamirpur and potentially.
