A major fire broke out at a scrap godown in Hyderabad’s Nandanavanam area overnight which was quickly put out by the Telangana Fire Services. The fire took place under the jurisdiction of Meerpet Police Station and was reported around 11 PM. There are no injuries or casualties but a new building next to the godown has been left with huge damage.
As fire department officials from Hayathnagar said, four fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the scene as soon as they received the call. Firefighters worked hard to put the flames away and avoid spreading to nearby residential and commercial property.
The fire was successfully brought under control by multiple firefighting teams, according to a fire official. The reality of the loss of property is still being assessed but authorities said the nearby under-construction building was damaged because it was close to the scrap storage facility.
The fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, but the exact cause will be confirmed when a detailed technical investigation and forensic examination of the site is performed, they said. Local police and fire department personnel will investigate what caused the fire.
Scrap godowns are vulnerable to fire because they can contain combustible materials like plastic, rubber, paper, cardboard, fabric and other recyclable materials. Once burned they can spread quickly and make firefighting more difficult.

People in the vicinity were seeing smoke billowing out of the town as smoke in the night sky and panic among nearby homes among residents as smoke plagues the area. A lot of people gathered outside of their homes as firefighters battled the flames for several hours. Traffic in parts of the region was temporarily halted to a standstill because emergency agencies were involved in firefighting and safety.
We are calling on warehouse owners, recycling operators, and scrap storage facilities to have regular electrical inspections and to strictly follow fire safety guidelines, we say. Regular maintenance of electrical wiring, installation of fire extinguishers and safety standards can help to reduce the likelihood of such incidents, said officials.
The Hyderabad Fire Department also advised commercial establishments that deal with flammable or recyclable materials to ensure that emergency exits remain accessible and firefighting equipment is in place at all times. Regular fire safety audits in public areas can be done to find out if any risks before they become a big accident.
The fire caused damage on both sides of the town but did not result in casualties and for both the residents and authorities the lack of casualties is a great relief. The firefighting team did not waste time and was there very soon and fast, the officials said, which prevented the fire from spreading to the neighborhood and its people.
There are still investigations ongoing and officials will provide a detailed report once they have completed the inspection of the affected premises. At the same time, authorities will also check the structural condition of the damaged building before any further construction or occupancy will be allowed.
