With some regions experiencing temperatures over 46 °C, the state of Telangana is now in one of its most scorching heatwaves of the year, making residents suffer considerable pain and triggering public health alarms.
The state’s weather service announced 82 areas that had experienced a heatwave, adding extra severe pain to residents’ lives. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the most extreme dry and heatwave conditions will likely persist in some areas of the state for the next few days.
Some northern and central Telangana suburbs made it the hottest ever, with temperatures well out of the normal ranges. Living life in these unbearable conditions daily has forced people indoors the majority of the time in the prime of the afternoon hours. So many towns looked left largely desolate, with roads and markets and even public spaces all over the place and people congregating in the hopes of evading the searing glare of the sun.
Temperatures Cross 46°C
Temperatures recorded by weather reports reached 46°C in some districts across multiple regions. Sections in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally and Mancherial were the hardest hit by the extended heatwave.
Cities and villages, including Hyderabad, also experienced a punishing heat outbreak at once, with hot winds and humidity reaching record highs and life conditions more than unbearable. And while the “feel-like” temperature in some parts of the state had also grown more commonly in parts of the state, amid dry heat and low moisture.
Meteorologists commonly describe heatwave conditions as temperatures having been well above normal for several consecutive days. These days, Telangana has had months of dry weather; meanwhile, heat throughout the state has intensified.
Health Concerns Rise
Extreme weather can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke and heat-related disease. Health experts say people must take precautions. Children, elders, outdoor workers and people with medical conditions have become the most vulnerable to extreme weather events. Residents have been asked to:
- Avoid stepping out between noon and 4 PM
- Drink plenty of water and fluids
- Wear light cotton clothing
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
- Use umbrellas, caps or scarves while travelling
Hospitals in some districts have reported an increasing number of patients presenting with dizziness, dehydration, and heat-related exhaustion, the researchers report.
Impact on Daily Life
Telangana is facing electricity and water shortages amid the excruciating heatwave. And so power consumption has skyrocketed, with homes and businesses turning more to air conditioners and coolers to cool down and allow air cooling.
Other local areas have seen water shortages since temperatures began getting warmer, forcing more people to drink. The underprivileged farmers who are already working outside and in the fields, and labourers still in outdoor work at worse adverse weather conditions, who already are enduring it the worst. Animal welfare organisations have also urged people to hang water bowls on the pavement and outdoors for birds and abandoned animals.
IMD Forecast
Heatwaves could continue in many districts for the next 48 to 72 hours, the IMD said. Those sectors might gain a brief reprieve from one or two isolated thunderstorms or slight downpours later in the week. Officials remain alert to the situation, prompting the citizens to abide by heat safety orders until they begin to relax.
