A 26-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room in Hyderabad’s Langar Houz area in the early hours of Friday, and police are investigating the circumstances around her death.
The deceased is Renuka, a person who lived in Alwal, Hyderabad. She was married, had a child and was working in a restaurant and pub in the city, police said.
According to the preliminary investigation, Renuka came into the hotel with a man at 3 a.m. on Wednesday. Hotel records show that the two remained together until Thursday night when the man left the hotel at 10.30 p.m., they said. Renuka was left alone in the room.
The hotel records show she ordered dinner at around 11.56 p.m. on Thursday. She had a video call with a friend a few minutes later, she told investigators.
According to Langar Houz Sub-Inspector Syed Munwar Ali, the woman died in a suicide attempt when she was on a video call with her friend Satya at 12.24 a.m.
The woman had checked into the hotel with a man on Wednesday morning. She died by suicide while on a video call with her friend at around 12.24 a.m., the police officer said.
Hotel staff discovered the incident and immediately alerted the police. A team from the Langar Houz Police Station rushed to the hotel, conducted a preliminary inspection of the room and sent the body to a government hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police have now registered a case and launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from the hotel will be reviewed, the woman’s mobile phone records will be looked at, as will the man who accompanied her to the hotel and the sequence of events that led to her death.
Moreover, officials will have to review digital evidence (the video call details and other electronic records) to determine the circumstances of the incident.
A case has been registered and we are investigating all aspects. The reason behind the woman's death will be known only after the investigation is completed," said Sub-Inspector Syed Munwar Ali.
Police emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages and that no conclusions have been drawn on the cause or circumstances of the woman’s death. The post-mortem examination and forensic analysis will be critical in deciding the next step to take, they said.
The government has advised the public to keep speculation to a minimum until the investigation is complete. All of this should be followed by forensic and medical findings, the investigators said.
