The death of Rishikesh Kumar, an MSc Physics student at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, has triggered protests on campus with students demanding that the treatment he received from administration of the IIT be rectified. Student protests in the wake of his death have accused the Student Affairs office of “moral profiling” and denying him a hostel room and hindering his education.
Students have said that Kumar’s death shows the hardships faced by the students in the universities. They have demanded senior officials to take action and the institute to respond directly to them.
Kumar was doing an MSc in Physics at IIT Delhi. His death by suicide has rocked the student community and classmates and other students have been grieving, and angry, by what they perceive as institutional decisions that have affected his education and residential life. The allegations, however, need to be thoroughly examined and thoroughly investigated, and the claims that have been made on the protests should not be taken as facts unless verified independently.
One of the most serious allegations is about the Student Affairs office. Protesters say that Kumar was subjected to personal or “moral” scrutiny and that it led to lack of hostel accommodation. Students allege that his academic project was also blocked, and that there is even more pressure on him. It is more difficult to know what happened and why, but what went wrong to these offices and the reasons that were cited is the key question which needs to be answered.
Students also stressed the greater issue of student welfare and institutional accountability. They say that institutions of higher studies need to provide a mechanism for students with administrative, academic or personal problems to get help immediately and not be judged or punished. They have asked for more transparency in hostel accommodation, academic projects and disciplinary or welfare related questions in place.
One of the protesters’ main demands is the immediate resignation of the Dean, Associate Dean and Head of Physics Department. Senior officials should be held to account for the circumstances they believe contribute to Kumar’s distress, students have said. It is also the compensation of ₹1 crore for Kumar’s family as they say his family should also be provided a lot of financial help after the tragedy.
The protests have brought up again the question of how top educational institutions respond when students encounter severe academic, administrative or personal problems. While institutes have procedures on hostels, academic projects and student conduct, students and faculty members frequently say they need to design such systems to have safeguards for student welfare and provide opportunities for grievance redress.
Cases of student deaths by suicide are particularly sensitive because many personal, social, academic and institutional factors can potentially contribute to a person’s distress. Therefore, investigations should never be rushed to conclusions but to investigate all the available evidence (communications, administrative records, academic decisions and accounts from people who were involved with the student).
For IIT Delhi’s community, Kumar’s death has become a time of mourning and a time of search for answers. Students who demonstrated on his behalf want the institute to take the allegations and answer them. They also want any inquiry into the circumstances prior to his death to be done fairly and transparently.

The incident once more makes clear the need to provide student support services for universities. There is some recognition that students who suffer academic difficulties, accommodation problems or administrative disputes need to have the same grievance system and assistance. We have to take care that disciplinary and administrative processes are transparent and that students aren’t humiliated or pressured.
As protests continue, it is likely that the response from IIT Delhi will be forthcoming and whether the allegations will now be investigated independently. Kumar’s death has not yet been investigated and it is a long way away from that.
Students’ demands including the resignations of senior officials and ₹1 crore compensation for Kumar’s family reflect the seriousness of the anger on campus. But the institute’s response and any formal inquiry will determine whether those demands are met or rejected. For now, students are demanding accountability, transparency and stronger safeguards for student welfare after a very painful loss.
