Students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest in Bengaluru demanding a CBI investigation into Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) allegations in Bengaluru. A large number of students rallied under the banner of a “Bengaluru Chalo” campaign to demand accountability and a transparent investigation to see if the recruitment process is to be investigated and held accountable.
Protesters in the vicinity of the alleged irregularities raised slogans against the accused and asked the Karnataka government to hand over the case to the CBI. The students say a central agency must conduct an independent investigation from the start to establish the facts, to identify those responsible and to ensure that candidates who have worked hard to secure government jobs are not affected by malpractice.
Near Maurya Circle, one of central Bengaluru’s major points of reference, the protest received attention. They tried to stage a road protest by sitting in the streets and continuing the student demonstration. Police intervened and asked the protesters to pull back to cease traffic and keep a clear line between traffic and public order.
As the students continued their demonstration, police began taking protesters into custody. The detention caused a tense situation between the students and police personnel. Officers pushed and jostled the protesters away from the road to take them into custody. Many students who participated in the demonstration were detained by police.
The protesters claimed they were protesting to protect the interests of thousands of aspirants preparing for KPSC exams. Local government recruitment examinations are crucial for young people with uncertain jobs, and if there is doubt about the recruitment process, candidates spend years preparing for competitive exams. Any malpractice in recruitment will need to be investigated thoroughly, the students said.
The demand for a CBI investigation was one of the central issues raised during the Bengaluru Chalo protest. ABVP representatives said that the investigation should be conducted by an agency capable of carrying out an independent and comprehensive probe. Suspicions regarding big public recruitment services cannot be taken lightly because they could be damaging to the careers of many candidates, they said.
The demonstration also showed growing frustration among students regarding recruitment exams in Karnataka. Competitive KPSC exams attract thousands of candidates annually, and candidates compete for positions across departments of the state government. Any leaky question paper, manipulation, procedural flaws or other issues can harm the confidence of the aspirants.
Police actions against the protesters, too, were another major point of debate. The government also intervened to prevent students from blocking the road, but the protesters were held in custody, and students’ protests were criticised for not coming to the government and not just detaining them.
Police moved students away from the protest site and kept the situation pretty tense in Maurya Circle. The police attempted to restore normal traffic flow to the area, and the demonstration was not going to escalate any further. The police and protesters had a brief physical confrontation during the detentions.
The ABVP has stressed that the protest is a manifestation of the seriousness of the concerns raised by KPSC aspirants and that the demand for an independent investigation will be continued. The organisation has called for transparency and accountability in government recruitment and called on the authorities to take concrete steps to address the grievances of students.
The recent demonstration also adds pressure on the Karnataka government to respond to the allegations regarding KPSC. For thousands of aspirants, the question is not just about an examination but about maintaining the fairness and credibility of the state's recruitment system. With calls for a CBI investigation growing louder, the government will now turn its attention to what kind of action the protesters are demanding and what steps it will take to remedy the alleged irregularities.
