TATA Motors Passenger Vehicles’ N.IO software-defined vehicle platform and Tata Communications MOVE will be integrated into this collaboration.
The aim of the integration is to make the Sierra.ev more connected, responsive and ready for data-intensive apps in automotive applications.
There will be built-in 5G for connecting an SUV
Unlike most cars, which rely on a smartphone hotspot or external connectivity, the Sierra.ev features an embedded 5G capability. Tata Motors lists an “iRA.ev Connected Suite with Advance 5G” as the vehicle’s key features and they support connected functions and remote vehicle controls.
5G is going to speed up the quality and reliability of connected services. For owners this would lead to more comfortable streaming of content online, faster cloud-based services and faster software updates.
MOVE Platform Powers The Connectivity
Tata Communications MOVE is a connectivity management platform for connected vehicles and IoT applications. The platform can manage numerous network and connectivity profiles and automotive manufacturers more easily see and control connected vehicles.
For automotive applications MOVE supports software updates, data management, connectivity monitoring and remote diagnostics. Tata Communications says its automotive platform provides multi-network connectivity and supports operations in more than 190 countries and territories.
Its embedded connectivity ecosystem can also support technologies including 4G/LTE, 5G, NB-IoT, LTE-Cat-M and Wi-Fi through eSIM-based solutions.
Faster Over-The-Air Updates
One of the biggest advantages of connected-car software is that it can be updated remotely. Instead of having to provide software upgrades at a service centre, manufacturers can deliver some updates over the air.
Tata Communications says MOVE uses connectivity and data insights to identify suitable networks and time windows for OTA downloads, potentially improving update reliability.
For the Sierra.ev, it might become increasingly important as vehicles rely on software for infotainment, connected services, driving assistance and other digital functions.
More than faster Internet
The 5G integration is not just about giving the Sierra.ev faster internet access. Connected architecture is more about a broader software-defined vehicle ecosystem to be built around it.
The collaboration will allow for seamless content streaming, fast software updates and real-time remote diagnostics and connected safety services.
Tata’s approach reflects the larger shift in the automobile industry in which cars are increasingly being treated as connected computing platforms rather than standalone machines.
With electric power, advanced digital features and built-in 5G connectivity, the Sierra.ev is one of Tata Motors’ strongest efforts yet to bring smartphone-like connectivity into the driving experience.
