India Commits Fresh Humanitarian Aid to Palestine, Says S. Jaishankar

India will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Palestine, reaffirming its stance on helping the Palestinian people in the midst of the humanitarian disaster. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said it is India's commitment to humanitarian assistance - and also the dialogue & diplomacy process - to try and settle the conflict.

The move is consistent with India’s policy of humanitarian assistance to civilians in conflict as well as diplomatic relations with the Middle East, which we have been pursuing for a long time. India never ceases to mention its concern for the humanitarian situation in Palestinian territories, and has been calling for measures to protect and comfort civilians.

The new aid is expected to include essential relief supplies to meet urgent humanitarian needs. Details about the size and type of the aid package will be released by the government through official channels, but India’s prior assistance has been medicines, medical equipment, food supplies, disaster relief materials, and other humanitarian items.

In the coming days, Jaishankar said India's support in this regard is based on humanitarian principles and is in line with the deep and long-standing friendship with the Palestinian people. He also said India will always support the negotiation of a peace and security-based two-state solution that will create sovereign, independent, and viable states of Palestine and Israel together.

India has maintained diplomatic ties with both Israel and Palestine and strives to balance the partnership with dialogue rather than conflict. Over the years, New Delhi has provided developmental assistance to infrastructure projects, education, healthcare, information technology, and capacity building in Palestine.

The humanitarian commitment comes as international humanitarian partners are still calling on the world community to support people who have to fight for food, medical care, shelter, and basic supplies for those affected by the continuing conflict. Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly called on the international community to increase the scale of aid for relief and ensure the delivery of assistance to the most vulnerable people.

India has been actively involved in humanitarian assistance, both in bilateral assistance and with international organisations. In recent years, India has sent several consignments of relief items, including medicines and life-saving medical equipment, to assist Palestinian civilians during times of increased conflict.

The announcement also underscores India’s broader role as a responsible global partner in humanitarian assistance in areas affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts and public health crises. India has come to be a reliable source of aid to the countries that are most in need through disaster response efforts, vaccine diplomacy, or humanitarian assistance in the short-term and long-term.

India’s approach, foreign policy experts say, is to keep dialogue with all actors in the world, encourage peaceful negotiations and abide by international law. Through humanitarian assistance combined with diplomacy, India is able to sustain stability and long-term peace in West Asia.

The new aid package will strengthen India’s long-standing developmental partnership with Palestine, while it will also standing in solidarity with the civilians who are in desperate humanitarian circumstances. At the same time, New Delhi also maintains that peace can only be achieved through negotiations, mutual respect, and a political solution that represents all parties.

And though India is still in a very difficult humanitarian situation, the new commitment is a reminder of our willingness to contribute to the international relief efforts and our commitment to peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
