India is preparing to conduct flight trials of the indigenous PGB-500 precision-guided bomb on the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft during September-October, another step in the country’s push to expand its domestic precision-strike capabilities.
The PGB-500 is under the 500 kg category and developed through joint research at India’s Defence Research Establishment and Indian Air Force.
The trials are planned to determine how the weapon performs when carried and released by Su-30MKI under controlled flight conditions.
The tests will focus on carriage, aerodynamic behaviour and safe release from the aircraft, according to reports. Successful completion of these stages would provide important data before the weapon can proceed towards further evaluation and potential operational induction.
The PGB-500 will be designed as a precision weapon that targets hardened structures, command facilities and other strategic infrastructure. Its guidance architecture will be built with satellite navigation and inertial navigation technology and terminal targeting.
This is significant when India has been trying to minimize dependency on imported weapons, but also have the potential to create indigenous systems for its frontline combat aircraft by increasing the number of indigenous systems.
The Su-30MKI, which is now a key platform for integration of Indian-made weapons - with Su-30MKI being used by the Indian Air Force in large part - is also very much a platform for integration of Indian-made weapons.
The fighter is already part of India’s growing network of indigenous air-launched capabilities. These include BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Astra air-to-air missile family and Rudram anti-radiation missile series.
Adding another precision-guided weapon could broaden the aircraft’s reach to long-range strike missions.
The PGB-500 trials therefore fit into a wider plan to convert the Su-30MKI into a more versatile platform capable of carrying a diverse range of domestically-developed weapons.
But the September-October timeline should be viewed as a reported testing schedule instead of an actual trial date. Flight-test programmes may change depending on technical readiness, weather, range availability and other evaluation requirements.
If trials are successful, the PGB-500 would still need to undergo further evaluation and certification before any decision on large-scale induction or domestic production.
But the programme is evidence of India’s increasing interest in developing precision weapons in the country.
For the Indian Air Force, adding more indigenous weapons with the Su-30MKI would enhance the aircraft’s flexibility and contribute to the objective of a more self-reliant defence ecosystem.
