The Indore Traffic Police has introduced advanced vehicle arrester and tyre killer systems as part of the drive to prevent dangerous speeding vehicles from overtaking and prevent criminals from being allowed to escape from police after being flagged.
The technology can also be used to help police track vehicles if drivers refuse to stop because they’re attempting to escape law enforcement or pose a threat to public safety, too, the report says.

The vehicle arrester system could be used when a speeding vehicle has already been identified or flagged at an earlier intersection but continues to move without following police instructions, officials said.
The system is intended to give law enforcement personnel an additional tool to stop vehicles in the event that conventional traffic barriers or manual intervention are not effective.

The vehicle arrester system works by blocking or restricting the movement of a speeding vehicle’s tyres, making it difficult for the driver to continue moving.
Police officials said the system might be used when a driver refuses to stop and appears determined to escape despite being alerted at a previous traffic junction.
When activated, the mechanism is designed to prevent the vehicle from moving much further, and police personnel take control.
That kind of technology would be particularly useful for cops who want to escape from the clutches of dangerous criminals on busy roads.
The system can reduce the need for high-speed police pursuits that can put pedestrians, other drivers, and police officers at risk, they say.
Spike-based Tyre Killer to Halt Dangerous Vehicles
The traffic police also developed a tyre killer device with spikes which can be deployed on the road to stop vehicles travelling at dangerous speeds.
The spike-based system is designed to damage or deflate a vehicle’s tyres in a controlled way, reducing the vehicle’s ability to continue moving.
Such systems are mostly used at high-security locations, controlled entry points or restricted zones that authorities need to prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering or leaving.
The Indore Traffic Police is also considering the technology as an additional enforcement tool in areas where motorists ignore traffic control and don’t stop.
The authorities would need to establish procedures for when and how the device should be activated to minimize the risk to other road users’ safety.
System to be installed at no-entry points
The new system will be installed at no-entry points to catch people who try to forcibly break traffic restrictions and escape, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) said.
The installation will increase enforcement of traffic rules in areas where traffic rules are deliberately broken, like when vehicles enter the restricted road and run through traffic lights.
The system could also be used by police to respond to cases of vehicles that were identified at an earlier intersection and continue moving despite warnings.
By placing the technology at strategic no-entry points, authorities will be able to create a stronger barrier to prevent unauthorised vehicle movement.
