In an impressive example of rehabilitation within India's prison system, two prisoners with life imprisonment for separate murder convictions were married in Mandore Open Jail in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, after the Rajasthan High Court granted special permission to marry after serving life sentences.
The wedding has attracted attention to the country and highlighted Rajasthan’s unique open prison system: reform, rehabilitation and giving well-behaved inmates a chance to rebuild their lives.
A Wedding Inside an Open Jail
The couple, Mularam and Seema, are both serving life imprisonment in separate murder cases. Despite their conviction, they were allowed to solemnise their marriage after getting legal approval from the Rajasthan High Court.
Instead of a traditional wedding ceremony, the couple had a ceremony in Mandore Open Jail where they exchanged garlands in front of prison officials and family.
They have a new chapter to begin as they go on serving their prison terms.
High Court granted Special Permission
The marriage was made possible only after the Rajasthan High Court granted special permission, allowing prison authorities to conduct the ceremony.
All legal formalities and prison regulations were followed before the wedding took place, officials said.
The approval is also a recognition that incarceration does not automatically remove certain civil rights, provided legal processes are followed, and prison authorities consider the request appropriate.
Rajasthan's unique open prison system
Rajasthan is recognized for having one of India’s oldest and most successful open prison systems.
Open jails, unlike conventional prisons, are designed for inmates who have shown:

- Discipline and responsibility.
- Low risk of escape or violence. Rehabilitation.
