An assistant professor of Kannur University has been sentenced to a total of six years in prison after being convicted in the forged documents and financial irregularities at the university.
On Thursday, 17 September 2026, the Kannur Vigilance Court sentenced Dr N. K. Deepak, assistant professor at Swami Anandatheertha Campus in Payyanur, to six years in jail and a fine of ₹80,000. The accused allegedly made fake documents to show that a professional assistant had been appointed and the university's funds were transferred to someone else.
What was the case about?
According to the prosecution case reported by PTI, the matter dates back to 2008 when the Kannur University registrar issued an order for the appointment of a professional assistant on a daily wage basis in the Physics Department at Swami Anandatheertha Campus.
Deepak was in charge of the Physics Department at the time and was entrusted with selecting the professional assistant.
Investigators claimed that Deepak had obtained a copy of another person's qualification certificate, added a false address and prepared a forged qualification certificate.
The documents were allegedly used to make the impression that a professional assistant had been appointed.
University Funds Allegedly Diverted
The prosecution claimed that university officials were led to think that the alleged employee was on the campus.
Salary payments were then shown as having been made to the supposed employee. According to the case before the court, the funds were therefore misappropriated even though the person shown in the records had not actually been appointed.
The allegations were investigated by the Vigilance Kannur Unit, which subsequently filed a chargesheet before the Kannur Vigilance Court.
Six-Year Sentence and Fine
Kannur Vigilance Court Judge K. Ramakrishnan found Deepak guilty under various sections and awarded a total sentence of six years' imprisonment.
The court also imposed a fine of ₹80,000.
The sentence is on the financial irregularities and document-forgery case of the purported appointment.
Investigation by Vigilance Authorities
The case was investigated by the Vigilance Kannur Unit after allegations concerning the appointment and payments came to light.
According to the report, former Vigilance Kannur Unit Deputy Superintendent of Police V. Madhusoodanan and current unit head, Deputy Superintendent of Police Babu Peringeth, were involved in the investigation.
Vigilance Public Prosecutor Anoop K. B. represented the prosecution before the court.
