Bengaluru: The long-anticipated expansion of the Karnataka cabinet has received some momentum after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and the Congress leader Dr. G. Parameshwara met AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge at Sadashivanagar, Bengaluru, on Friday.
The high-level meeting came ahead of Kharge’s scheduled visit to New Delhi and is being viewed as a significant step towards finalising the much-anticipated cabinet expansion in the state.
According to party sources, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister discussed the pending ministerial appointments and urged the Congress high command to finalise the list of new ministers at the earliest. The expansion has been in discussion for many weeks, with several MLAs aspiring for a place in the Siddaramaiah-led cabinet.
The meeting is of political significance as Congress leaders are keen to achieve cabinet expansion as soon as possible to coordinate the administrative work in the short term and strengthen the party in preparation for political problems ahead of the future.
Apart from cabinet expansion, the leaders are believed to have discussed some of the important political developments happening in Karnataka. In fact, the Bidadi Township project and the recent political statements made by Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would also have been discussed.
Though no official statement was issued immediately after the meeting, party insiders said the interaction was constructive and centered around organisational and governance-related matters.
Cabinet expansion has been one of the most closely watched political developments in Karnataka, and several Congress legislators are waiting for an opportunity to join the ministry. Regional representation, caste equations, and party loyalty will be the key to final decision-making.
Political observers believe the Congress leadership has the political leadership working to make sure that the expansion meets both the administrative needs of the Congress and party members’ internal party goals without generating dissatisfaction among legislators.
The meeting with Mallikarjun Kharge, one of the Congress party's tallest leaders, is expected to provide clarity on the next course of action. Since Kharge is responsible for coordinating the state leadership and the party high command, his inputs are likely to be crucial in finalising the ministerial list.
As Kharge is planning to go to Delhi, the Karnataka leadership is hopeful that the remaining formalities will be completed soon, paving the way for the cabinet expansion.
Political parties in Karnataka are waiting for the next move from the Congress leadership on who will get ministerial positions, as we know that we are looking forward to who will have ministerial berths and who will be ministers in cabinet space in the short term, and who will be selected for cabinet appointments as well. A cabinet expansion is likely to be announced in the next few days.
