Karnataka CM's New Vision: Bengaluru–Kanakapura Rail Line Back on Track? D.K. Shivakumar Pushes Major Connectivity Project

The long-discussed idea of connecting Bengaluru and Kanakapura by railway has gained even more momentum, and the Central Government has taken up the issue with Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The proposed railway connection will improve the connectivity between Bengaluru and many places in southern Karnataka, but will reduce road transport costs.

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently spoke to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar by telephone and sought the support of the Union Minister for Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar to pursue the Bengaluru–Kanakapura railway line. The move is understood as a major infrastructure project to help thousands of commuters and to help the development of the region.

At present, there is no direct railway line connecting Bengaluru to Kanakapura. Traffic is mainly operated by road transport (buses and private vehicles) between the two destinations. But the route is always prone to traffic congestion, especially in the morning and evening, when many of the commuters and tourists take the Bengaluru-Kanakapura Road.

The proposal is linked to the larger Bengaluru-Chamarajanagar railway project that has been under discussion for several years. It is expected that Kanakapura would become a major railway station on the new railway line. The line will connect Bengaluru with Kanakapura, Malavalli, Kollegal and Chamarajanagar through a railway track of 142 km.

If approved and implemented, the railway project could transform transportation in the region. Daily commuters travelling from Kanakapura to Bengaluru would find a new, cheaper, and more reliable means of transport that could be much easier and more efficient. The railway line would also reduce road travel, and thus the traffic congestion on one of the busiest highways connecting Bengaluru to the southern districts.

Transportation experts believe the project would bring substantial advantages to Kanakapura, Malavalli, and Kollegal residents, many of whom currently rely on long bus trips or personal vehicles. Better rail connections would also help boost local economic activity by facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services.

Another major advantage of the proposed railway corridor is its possible impact on tourism. Kanakapura is the junction of many popular tourist destinations such as Mekedatu and Sangama, which draw thousands of visitors each year. Direct railway connections could make these places more accessible for tourists from Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka.

The proposal comes at a time when big transportation projects like the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project and Metro Rail expansion are getting a lot of attention and investment. Whereas these are all about improving urban mobility in Bengaluru, the Bengaluru-Kanakapura railway project is also to improve regional connectivity and provide long-term transportation solutions to neighbouring districts.

Rail transport is generally more environmentally sustainable than road-based transportation, infrastructure planners say. More railways help reduce vehicle emissions, fuel consumption and traffic-related delays and help to contribute to broader sustainability goals.

Although still in the proposal stage, a revival of the project has brought hope to residents and local leaders who have long advocated for better transportation infrastructure in the region. The project must be approved by the Ministry of Railways, feasibility studies must be done, funding allocations and detailed project planning are necessary before it can be implemented.

If the railway line gets the necessary approvals, it could become one of the most important connectivity projects in southern Karnataka, connecting Bengaluru with other districts and driving economic growth, tourism development and quality of life for thousands of people.

For now, all eyes are on the Centre’s response to the proposal and when the dream of connecting Bengaluru and Kanakapura will finally come true.
