A major tragedy was narrowly averted in Karnataka’s Bidar district after a government transport bus was believed to have fallen in a canal near Byalahalli in Bhalaki taluk when it was trying to escape a car from the road. Many passengers were injured in the accident to get to Bidar in the bus, which was going from Humnabad in Bidar.
The incident took place near Byalahalli, where the government bus went off the road and ended up in a canal, the local press reported. The bus suddenly turned and was moving and people in the bus screamed. According to the report, 42 people were inside the bus at the time of the accident and the chances of being killed at all were high.
According to the initial report, the driver tried to avoid an approaching car but he was trapped in a vehicle and his bus was going over. Then the bus was going towards the road and fell into the canal. There would have been water in the canal and people in the bus would have died. The water level was low at the time the incident happened so nothing went wrong.
Passengers inside the bus suffered minor injuries in the accident, said the sources. The injured passengers were sent to the main health centre in Halhalli K village for medical care after the accident. Doctors and healthcare workers treated those who had minor injuries. There was no major loss of life at the time of the incident, but the status of passengers may be less clear if the authorities investigate the situation.
There was a lot of concern among local people and people travelling in the vicinity. People in the community of the bus falling into the canal gathered around the vehicle near the place and helped in the immediate response as news of the bus falling into the canal spread, local people from nearby villages reported. Quickly responding can be critical in road accidents when a huge passenger vehicle is involved.
The bus was on Humnabad-Bidar line when it happened, and had already been on the way to Bidar. The government buses that run between towns and villages in the region are often used by students, employees, senior citizens and other residents who depend on them to travel around. So an accident with a crowded bus can be dangerous and therefore road safety and driving care is very important.
The exact cause of the accident will have to be established through an official investigation. The road condition, the position of the car that was allegedly in front of the bus, the driver’s behavior and other factors in the accident may be examined. Such road conditions, visibility or traffic movement may also be examined.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of caution on roads, particularly in areas where roads run close to canals, rivers or other water bodies. Even small deviation from the road can be dangerous for a large passenger vehicle. Drivers of buses and other heavy vehicles need to be extremely alert and stay in control in the event of a sudden traffic situation.
For the passengers involved, the immediate priority was getting medical attention and making sure everyone in the bus was accounted for. The canal had relatively little water at the time and so it was believed to have saved them from an even bigger disaster. If the water level were much higher, the rescue operation would have been much more difficult and the consequences much more severe.
There could be the recommendation that local authorities and transport officials consider the incident as well to see what additional safety measures are necessary along the stretch. Such road markings, warning signs and sufficient barriers around canals and other hazards can reduce the chances of vehicles leaving the road. Such preventive measures are especially important on routes that are often used by public transport.
The accident is another reminder of the risks faced by passengers and drivers on busy roads in Karnataka. Government buses are still a vital part of the public transportation network in the state, connecting cities and villages to smaller towns and villages. To ensure these vehicles operate safely, responsible driving is required, roads are maintained, vehicles are maintained and traffic management is done well.
While the incident initially raised fears of a major tragedy because of the number of passengers on board, the relatively shallow water level in the canal and the swift response averted a potentially dangerous situation. Passengers with minor injuries were taken to the nearby primary health centre (where the accident and its events are still under investigation) for treatment, the police said.
We expect more information once officials have a look at the situation and get to the bottom of it,” the minister said. An accident near Byalahalli serves as a reminder that in a split second a driver’s attempt to escape another vehicle can result in an accident of any sort, particularly when a large passenger vehicle is involved. Now the bus is recovering, the bus is OK and the passengers are now safe and the reasons why the vehicle was driven off the road and fell into the canal is under investigation.
