In a significant anti-corruption operation, Karnataka Lokayukta officials conducted simultaneous raids on Monday morning in Kalaburagi and Bidar districts of Karnataka on several properties linked to retired Panchayat Raj Superintending Engineer Manik Kanakatti.
The early morning raids created a buzz in both districts as Lokayukta officials arrived at several areas associated with the retired engineer. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Siddaraju, who supervised the search and monitored the search progress.
According to the preliminary information, the raids were conducted in five locations of Manik Kanakatti and his family members. The main location of the searches was his home in Godutayi Colony in Kalaburagi city. Documents, property records, financial documents, financial transactions, and other documents that could provide insight into the assets of the retired engineer were searched.
Apart from Kalaburagi, the operation also went on in the neighbouring Bidar district. Lokayukta teams searched Kanakatti’s native house in Hallikhed village, where officials looked at land records and other documents related to agricultural and residential properties. They also searched a farmhouse in the same village as part of the wider investigation.
The anti-corruption agency also expanded its operations to Humnabad town, where two commercial complexes linked to the retired official were searched. The investigation of these properties will help investigators determine the degree of investments that the former engineer made in and after his government service.
According to sources, the Lokayukta is investigating whether the value of assets owned by Kanakatti is proportional to his declared income during his tenure in the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department. They typically conduct a thorough examination of movable and immovable assets - land holdings, residential buildings, commercial properties, bank accounts, investments, vehicles, and other valuable possessions.
The raids are part of the Karnataka Lokayukta’s continued drive to curb corruption and hold public officials accountable. In recent years, the agency has expanded its focus on people in government who have been accused of accumulating wealth through illegal means. In many cases, simultaneous searches are conducted in different locations so that evidence is not destroyed or hidden away, and to get a picture of the person’s wealth.
Officials have not yet disclosed the exact value of the assets under investigation because the verification and assessment are still in progress. Teams are gathering relevant documents and recording the properties and investments found during the search. Once the investigation is complete, the results of the investigation will be studied to determine if legal action is warranted.
The operation has attracted much attention as it involves a senior retired official from the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department. Residents in the areas where the raids were conducted closely followed the developments throughout the day as Lokayukta officers continued their searches.
The authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and conclusions on the disproportionate assets will only be drawn after they have reviewed all evidence collected during the raids. More details will be forthcoming once officials conclude the valuation of assets and present their initial report.
The raids are evidence of the Lokayukta’s commitment to combating corruption and promoting public transparency. The searches will continue to be investigated in the future, and any action taken following the evidence is to be implemented.
