Karnataka politics got another blow after Minister Mallikarjun was accused of making abusive and personal remarks against BJP MLA Harish during a public meeting in Harihar town of Davangere district. The incident reportedly took place when complaints over water availability from Bhadra reservoir were made. BJP leaders have lashed out at the minister saying it is an insult to MLA, his family and people he represents.
The controversy began when farmers met the public representatives and complained about water from Bhadra reservoir. They said that BJP MLA Harish had given them his advice on this issue of water. Mallikarjun allegedly got angry when the name of MLA Harish was mentioned by farmers and started shouting.
During the exchange, the minister allegedly used abusive language when referring to Harish’s parentage. He also reportedly told the farmers not to address BJP legislator as “anna” (elder brother in Kannada). In Karnataka people use this term respectfully to refer to an elder brother or senior person. The remarks were soon political criticism fodder with BJP leaders accusing the minister of crossing the limits of political discourse.
The incident has just added another layer to the political tensions over water management and Bhadra reservoir. Water issues are politically sensitive in Karnataka — where farmers rely heavily on reservoirs and irrigation projects, so complaints about supply can become politically explosive very quickly (rival parties use public meetings to show administration shortcomings or demand more assistance for affected communities).
BJP MLA Harish was among those who strongly condemned the reported remarks. BJP leaders said political differences should not turn personal between elected representatives and their families. Criticism of a politician’s decisions or political position is part of democratic debate but alleged comments on family background and parentage are unacceptable, they said.
Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra also condemned the minister’s reported remarks. The BJP leadership said the language used was unparliamentary and that statements like these do not come from a minister holding public office. The party has tried to make the controversy about political dignity and respect because allegedly the minister made the remarks during a public interaction with farmers as well as other members of the constituency.
The episode has also exposed how confrontational political exchanges have become in Karnataka. Ministers and opposition leaders go to public meetings where sharp criticism is levelled over irrigation, drinking water, agricultural support and implementation of government schemes etc., but when personal attacks are made on political opponents then the focus shifts from the public issue at hand (irrigation, drinking water etc.) towards a debate about political conduct.
For farmers in the area, the original problem remains that of water from Bhadra reservoir. The reservoir and irrigation system are vital to agriculture in parts of central Karnataka so water distribution is a perennial political issue. Farmers’ demands for adequate and timely supply of water have often put pressure on elected representatives and state administration.

The controversy over Mallikarjun’s comments is therefore being played out against the backdrop of competing political claims on water management. The Congress government and BJP continue to slug it out over governance and development issues but when personal attacks are alleged they tend to ratchet up political rhetoric.
The BJP will keep highlighting the remarks as part of its attack on the ruling establishment and the controversy could also revive debate over political decorum among public representatives. For now, the dispute has diverted attention away from the farmers’ water issues to the language used at the meeting.
With Bhadra reservoir and other water issues in Karnataka still tense the incident is another example of how local grievances can quickly turn into political flashpoints. Harish, Vijayendra and others BJP leaders reactions show that this issue is going to be around for some time in politics in state as both parties continue positioning themselves on farmers’ concerns and regional water management.
