A retired Army man allegedly shot his friend in the head after a fight over money at a house in Acharya Puri Colony in Sector 14, Gurugram police said. Hemant Kaushik (38), a rental property dealer was rushed to a nearby private hospital after the incident and is reportedly critical.
Preliminary information is that the incident was triggered by a long standing financial dispute between Kaushik and his close friend Amarjeet Grewal (resident of Bhiwani). Grewal had retired from Indian Army around a year ago and is now doing finance and paying guest (PG) business in Gurugram.
Police said the two men met at Kaushik’s house in Acharya Puri Colony where an argument ensued over financial dispute. What started as verbal argument escalated into shooting within few seconds, they added.
Investigating officer Amit Kumar said Grewal had allegedly pulled out his licensed pistol during the altercation and shot Kaushik in the head. Kaushik was seriously injured and after the alleged shooting Grewal fled from the spot.
The sound of gunshot was heard by people living and around that area. Neighbours and acquaintances rushed to Kaushik’s house where they found him seriously injured. With the help of locals and people known to the injured man, Kaushik was taken to a private hospital near by for emergency medical treatment.
Doctors are treating Kaushik for the gunshot injury and his condition is serious as of now (according to preliminary info available). Since it was the location of the injury that triggered the case, police have immediately started an investigation into what happened before the shooting took place.
The Sector 14 police were alerted and reached the spot. The officers started examining the crime scene and information about the clash between the two men was gathered from them. Police are also investigating financial dispute which allegedly took place before the shooting.
Police are expected to investigate the nature of the money dispute, relationship between the two men and how Grewal got to Kaushik’s house in the first place. They will also try to establish what happened immediately before the gun was allegedly fired.
The fact that the alleged weapon was licensed pistol is also expected to be part of the probe. Police will need to find out what happened to the gun and check records as part of their investigation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about disputes turning violent (when firearms are involved) and how money disagreements sometimes cause long-term tension between people but police need to establish exactly what happened in this case so that responsibility can be established.
At this point the allegations against Grewal are part of the police investigation. The shooting alone does not prove guilt evidence, witness accounts and investigative findings will all be needed to know what happened.
Police are looking at what evidence is available and asking people who may have information about what happened. Statements from witnesses and people familiar with the financial dispute could help investigators reconstruct the confrontation.
Hemant Kaushik’s condition will also be a major concern as the investigation proceeds. His medical treatment and doctors’ assessment may give clues about what kind of injury it was and how severe it was.
Authorities have not yet revealed how much money was involved in the dispute or what caused the disagreement. Police are also looking for the accused after the alleged shooting.
