KFDC to Sell FSSAI-Approved, Vacuum-Packed Fish in 'Nandini Style'

In a major push to enhance quality and build consumer trust in seafood, the Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC) is set to introduce processed, fresh, 'Ready-to-Cook' fish in vacuum-sealed packaging under its own brand. The ambitious initiative, modeled after the wildly successful Nandini dairy brand, aims to establish a trusted state-wide label for high-quality fish products.

The 'Nandini' Model for Seafood Quality

Inspired by the Karnataka Milk Federation’s (KMF) brand, which enjoys immense popularity and trust, the KFDC plans to provide consumers with consistently high-quality, hygienic, and convenient fish. For years, one of the primary hurdles for consumers has been the difficulty in obtaining genuinely fresh fish and the tedious process of cleaning and processing it at home. Furthermore, the KFDC has faced issues with some agencies allegedly compromising on quality and selling substandard fish under the corporation's name.

To counter this, the new product line—marketed as 'Ready-to-Cook'—will feature fish that is thoroughly cleaned, processed, and packed, offering unparalleled convenience and a guarantee of freshness. The corporation’s primary objective is to give a trusted brand identity to Karnataka’s fish, boosting public confidence and providing a reliable product.

Sourcing, Processing, and Distribution

The rollout is expected to begin with a pilot phase in January or February 2026. The process will strictly adhere to international hygiene standards:

  1. Sourcing: Fresh fish will be procured directly from major fishing hubs like Malpe and transported to processing centres in Bengaluru.
  2. Processing: The fish will be cleaned, processed, and stored at a strict zero-degree Celsius temperature to maintain peak freshness.
  3. Packaging: The processed fish will be vacuum-packed in consumer-friendly sizes, primarily half-kilogram and one-kilogram packets.
  4. Assurance: Each pack will feature a printed label with FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) approval, ensuring compliance and giving consumers a mechanism to report any quality issues.

Initially, the products will be sold through the KFDC’s existing network of 28 agency outlets. This move is also expected to benefit local fish farmers and the overall fisheries ecosystem by providing a strong brand and reliable market.

Expansion of Matsyadarshini Restaurants

In parallel with the branding efforts, KFDC is also pushing ahead with plans to expand its popular 'Matsyadarshini' fish meal restaurants. Following a budget announcement, a modern, well-equipped Matsyadarshini is set to open soon in Mysuru. The corporation intends to expand these affordable, healthy fish restaurants across all districts of the state, ensuring that nutritious seafood meals are available to the public at fair prices.
