A heated courtroom clash between a lawyer and police personnel at the Beach Road site attracted the eye of the court visitors. The fight could only be described as “physical,” according to the police.
Witnesses said the incident took place close to the entrance to the court complex on Beach Road. Although the exact sequence of events is still not clear, initial reports indicate that a dispute between the advocate and police officers turned into a verbal argument and then got into a physical fight.
The videos and photographs made by witnesses showed both sides in dispute and people at the scene attempting to pull them apart. This led to a crowd around the court site to be quite heavy as curious people waited to see what happened.
Police officers near the site rushed to the scene and sent more officers to the scene to prevent the situation from escalating and to keep law and order going on in the busy court building. Court staff and members of the legal fraternity also intervened to calm the tension down and to convince both sides to settle down.
Even so, officials said that a detailed investigation has been launched. Video footage from the scene is being reviewed and a number of witnesses and police officers and lawyers are looking into the reasons for the clash.
There is no official statement on whether anyone sustained serious injuries during the incident. Minor injuries might have been sustained during the scuffle, but officials have not given details. If necessary, those involved might undergo medical examination.
Lawyers and law enforcement personnel have held discussions about the incident and many feel that the decorum of a public place that is associated with the justice system has been violated. “Arguments should always be worked out in good faith and professional way,” they said.
Police officials said that peace and security in and around court premises is at the heart of the investigation and if any violation of the law occurs, it will be investigated. Authorities also suggested that the public not publish unverified claims or edited videos on social media that can misrepresent the incident.
