A tragic fire in Maharashtra’s district hospital in the early morning hours took three newborn babies’ lives. The tragedy took place at the Amravati District Women’s Hospital when a ventilator explosion caused a fire in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where dozens of newborns were being treated.
According to initial information, the fire erupted around 3:30 a.m. on the third floor of the hospital building. 39 newborn babies were admitted to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) and NICU for treatment and monitoring. The ventilator malfunction or explosion caused the fire, investigators said, and it will be determined if this is the case after a more thorough technical review.
As flames and thick smoke quickly spread through the ward, doctors, nurses, and hospital staff immediately started an emergency rescue operation. Medical personnel disconnected life-support equipment as soon as they could and rushed to evacuate the infants from the area that was affected and took off any equipment and the babies that were inside the ward. The quick response was crucial to avoid a disaster in the hospital; dozens of newborns were able to be saved in other parts of the hospital and nearby medical facilities by moving them away from the outbreak’s vicinity.
Three newborn babies were seriously burned and suffered smoke inhalation during the rescue efforts but survived due to their injuries. The deaths have shocked the local community and caused great grief among the families and healthcare workers. The six critically injured newborns were taken to a nearby Super Speciality Hospital for treatment, along with the other babies who were present.
Emergency services and local officials acted quickly at the hospital when they learned about the fire. Firefighters managed to contain the situation before it spread through the building. Police officials, along with hospital administrators and technical experts, have started to examine the site to figure out what caused the explosion and the subsequent fire. Electrical systems, ventilators, and other medical equipment in the neonatal ward are to be examined, according to investigators.
