The southwest monsoon is still active in Karnataka, and there is a lot of rain in a number of parts of the state. Heavy rainfall in coastal districts and parts of the Malnad region on 24th August, according to the latest report of IMD, is expected to bring torrential rains and strong winds.
Most districts in south and north interior Karnataka are likely to be hit by moderate rain with strong winds, and the weather department is advising caution in rain-covered and waterlogged areas, as well as areas prone to landslides and strong winds, the weather department said.
Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada coastal districts are likely to be flooded in some places by heavy rains. Besides rain, wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph will also be observed along the coast, and rough weather will be present. Fishermen and those living near the coast will need to closely monitor the weather and take the necessary precautions. The expected rainfall will improve the water supply in reservoirs and rivers, but it can also cause flooding in places that are prone to low-lying land.
The Malnad region is also likely to experience heavy rainfall. Shivamogga district is expected to get heavy showers with winds in the range of 40-50 kmph. Similar weather conditions are expected in Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu districts, where heavy rainfall may only happen in isolated areas. It is in these districts that hilly terrain and dense forests often lead to road blockages and minor landslides during heavy rain; these are very common during intense rainfall.
Bengaluru and its neighbouring districts are also under a rain alert. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ballari, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Mysuru, Ramanagara, and Vijayanagara districts should be able to experience light to moderate rain. The showers will provide relief from the hot weather but will also lead to traffic congestion and water accumulation in some parts of Bengaluru, especially in the afternoon and evening commuting hours.
North Interior Karnataka will also experience rainfall activities. The districts of Vijayapura, Raichur, Dharwad, Gadag, Kalaburagi, and Bagalkote are anticipated to experience light to moderate rain with strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph. Belagavi, Bidar, Haveri, Koppal, and Yadgir districts are also expected to receive rainfall with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. Farmers in these regions should take precautions to protect crops and agricultural infrastructure from weather-related damage.
The IMD has also indicated that similar weather conditions are likely to continue on August 25. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu districts. In other parts of south and north interior Karnataka, scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected over the next 48 hours.
The rainfall data from the last 24 hours ending on the evening of August 23 shows that monsoon activity remained normal in the state. Coastal Karnataka received a lot of rainfall, and several districts in south interior Karnataka also received significant precipitation. Agumbe in Shivamogga district received the highest rainfall of 8 cm, followed by Indi in Vijayapura district with 7 cm, and Subrahmanya in Dakshina Kannada district got 5 cm of rainfall.
When the monsoon remains active, weather experts say that rainfall will continue to aid agriculture, groundwater recharge, and reservoir storage levels. Residents of the affected areas should keep track of weather bulletins and be prepared for heavy rain and strong winds, exercising caution during periods of intense rainfall.
