Makar Sankranti 2026: Partial closures of banking services across India. Makar Sankranti, a major cultural festival, is not a “national” bank holiday. The Reserve Bank of India holiday calendar states that physical bank branches will not be opened, and only in states where the festival is declared a public holiday.
State-wise: Bank Holiday List: Jan 14, 2026
The RBI’s list from below under the Negotiable Instruments Act indicates that the following states and cities will have the banks closed on 14 January.
- Gujarat (Ahmedabad): Closed for Uttarayan/Makar Sankranti
- Odisha (Bhubaneswar): Closed for Makar Sankranti
- Assam (Guwahati): Closed for Magh Bihu
- Arunachal Pradesh (Itanagar): Closed for Makar Sankranti
- Sikkim (Gangtok): Closed for Maghe Sankranti
Where are Banks Open on January 14?
In most other areas of the country, including the leading financial cities, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru, banks will be fully operational on Jan 14.
A Word of caution
In South Indian states such Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the main bank holiday for the harvest fest will take place that is called Pongal/Sankranti on the next day, Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Impact on Digital Banking
And even in states with physical branches closed, digital banking platforms will be available to customers around the clock. You can continue to use:
- Mobile Banking & Net Banking: NEFT, RTGS and IMPS transfers.
- UPI: For instant peer-to-peer and merchant payments.
- ATMs: For cash withdrawals and mini-statements.
- Online payments: To ensure that your utility bills are paid on time.
Branch-specific tasks such as cash deposit, cheque clearing, and locker access will not be available in holiday-observing states. Customers are advised to plan out their visits accordingly.
