Political activity intensified in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday, September 26, 2026, ahead of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's public meeting in Serampore.
A group of people with black flags surrounded Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh’s vehicle in Uttarpara. Slogans were raised as Ghosh was travelling towards Serampore to attend the rally.
According to reports, eggs and stones were also thrown at the vehicle. The rear windshield of Ghosh’s car was damaged during the incident. Ghosh went back to Kolkata after the event.
Kunal Ghosh’s Vehicle Damaged
Videos appearing in connection with the incident showed people surrounding Ghosh’s car and hitting it. The protesters were seen carrying black flags and raising slogans, the newspaper reported.
Ghosh claimed that his vehicle had been attacked and that there was no adequate police presence at the site. He said he would approach the police regarding the incident.
The identity and political affiliation of those involved were not independently established in the initial reports. India Today reported that the incident led to competing claims from the TMC and BJP, while police had not fixed responsibility at the time of its report.
TMC leaders accused BJP supporters of being behind the incident. However, BJP leaders gave a different account, one BJP MLA saying it was a public reaction. These claims remain allegations from the respective political sides and had not been independently established by police as the reports were published.
Mamata Banerjee’s Serampore Rally
The protest took place as Mamata Banerjee was scheduled to speak at a public meeting in Serampore on September 26.
The Calcutta High Court had permitted the meeting to be held on Serampore Court Ground from 4 pm to 6 pm. The court made several conditions, including a 1,000-person limit and directions to maintain law and order. The order also said that the organisers should not hold a procession on G.T. Road or block the road.
The venue was a matter of legal dispute before the rally. The meeting was initially planned at another place, but the court proceedings did eventually bring in permission for the Serampore Court Ground.

Mamata Raises Allegations Ahead of Rally
Mamata Banerjee also alleged that TMC leaders were prevented from attending the rally.
She claimed some party leaders had been placed under “house arrest” and that BJP workers had blocked routes leading to the meeting. These statements were made by Banerjee and TMC and were reported as allegations.
The TMC and BJP also had disputes over the situation around the rally. Police action and security arrangements were also another point of political disagreement before the meeting.
Earlier, TMC leaders had also claimed that a large number of party workers had been detained ahead of the rally. Police and BJP leaders gave different accounts of those developments.
Why the Incident Is Significant
The incident has attracted attention as it took place just hours before Mamata Banerjee’s public meeting in Serampore.
The black flags, slogans and alleged attack on a TMC MLA’s vehicle added another layer of tension around an event that had already faced legal and administrative disputes over its venue and arrangements.
