The event was to be inaugurated by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Water Resources Minister D.K. Shivakumar on October 11. But officials have now confirmed the schedule has been changed due to the Deputy Chief Minister's pre-planned engagements on the same day. As a result, the district administration and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam have decided to postpone the inauguration and shift the entire event by a week.

The eight-day celebration will begin on October 18 and last until October 25. This will be filled with thousands of devotees, tourists and culture lovers from different parts of Karnataka and neighbouring states.

The Cauvery Aarti has quickly become one of Karnataka’s most significant river-based spiritual events. Inspired by the world-famous Ganga Aarti held on the banks of the Ganga in North India, the initiative was launched last year with the aim of honouring the River Cauvery, commonly referred to as the lifeline of southern India. The event is a blend of spirituality, cultural heritage and tourism, and is a unique place to see how much the river is going to change the lives of millions of people in the country.

The Cauvery Aarti was developed by D.K. Shivakumar in the course of his management of the state water resources portfolio. The idea was to make a good toast to the Cauvery River for agriculture, drinking water supply and other activities done across the districts of Karnataka and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The response to the first edition was very good, and it motivated the government to carry on this tradition.

This year’s event is coming at a time of rainfall and water availability issues. Karnataka experienced a weaker monsoon compared to expectations in some areas, and reservoirs’ inflows and water storage levels have deteriorated. But officials still believe the event should be carried out because there’s water available in the KRS reservoir.

Preparations are in progress at the KRS reservoir site. The district administration, tourism department, and Cauvery Neeravari Nigam are working together to organise lighting, seating, cultural performances, security measures and facilities for visitors. Devotional rituals, traditional music, cultural activities and a beautiful aarti ceremony on the banks of the reservoir, as well as others, are expected.

Tourism institutions are also hopeful that the event will raise the number of people coming to Mandya and Srirangapatna during the festive season. The beautiful view of the KRS Dam and the religious atmosphere of the Cauvery Aarti would make for an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Now that the new dates are officially announced, devotees and visitors who will experience the spectacle have to mark their calendars for October 18 to October 25 for the most beautiful show, when the Cauvery will again be the centre of a celebration of faith, culture and Karnataka’s rich history.
