A huge new flagpole is now up at the historic Baavutagudde’s Tagore Park in Mangaluru, a new landmark for the coastal city. The structure is 78 meters tall and will carry the national flag on August 15, Independence Day.
The giant flagpole will become one of Mangaluru's most prominent attractions since Baavutagudde is located at an elevated location. Once the national flag is raised, it will be visible from all parts of the city.
₹75 Lakh Project Under Mangaluru Smart City Scheme
The project has been implemented under the Mangaluru Smart City initiative at an estimated cost of ₹75 lakh.
The funding was deposited through the Smart City project, and the work was conducted using contemporary engineering techniques and installation.
The giant structure was made with the assistance of heavy cranes. The strong sections from Raipur were joined on the site before the flagpole was positioned.
14-Tonne GI Structure
The newly installed flagpole is said to be made of galvanised iron (GI) and weighs about 14 tonnes.
The installation was done by Sunlight Luminaries, which was responsible for putting the massive structure in place.
For the height and weight of the installation, such specialised equipment and careful engineering were required during the construction and erection process.
Motorised Flag-Hoisting System
The flagpole has been equipped with a motorised flag-hoisting mechanism that allows the national flag to be raised and lowered efficiently.
A three-phase electrical connection has also been provided to operate the system.
The safety features were incorporated into the structure due to the height and Mangaluru's coastal weather conditions.
A lightning protection system has been installed near the top of the pole. Red warning lights have also been placed on both sides so that the tall structure remains visible to aircraft.
Special Flag For Coastal Winds
Mangaluru has strong coastal winds, especially in the monsoon season. To withstand the local weather conditions, a specially designed polyester national flag measuring 30 feet by 45 feet has been prepared for the flagpole.
The design and installation of the flag will be important because a flag of this size at such a height must withstand considerable wind pressure.
Baavutagudde Has Historical Significance
The new flagpole is a very historical site.
Baavutagudde is associated with Mangaluru's history during India’s freedom movement. The location is remembered in connection with the hoisting of the national flag during the freedom struggle.
That is why the new 78-metre flagpole is viewed as a symbol of the city's development and also of the place.
National Flag To Fly On August 15
The biggest attraction will come on August 15 when the national flag is officially hoisted on the giant flagpole as part of Independence Day celebrations.
