Eggs were thrown at the procession and slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” were heard as people from both sides got into a heated fight.

Ganpati processions are an important part of Mumbai’s public religious and cultural life and huge crowds gather along procession routes, from devotees to organizers, police personnel and local residents.

Any dispute in such events could quickly become a mess - especially when there are so many people around.

There are videos and posts about the Mazgaon incident on social media showing crowds gathered around the scene in a frenzy and emotions.

Eggs thrown at the procession have been one of the major topics of debate but the exact sequence of events and circumstances of the alleged event are not yet known and officials are not clear about what happened.

From the footage that led to the confrontation, the police brought more personnel to the area to prevent the situation from getting worse.

Police are very much in charge of maintaining peace in the wake of religious processions and in Mumbai where large crowds can have a big impact on people and traffic it’s a big challenge.

The chanting of “Jai Shri Ram” added another layer to the confrontation, with social media users posting different versions of what happened. As is often the case with large crowds, individual videos may only tell part of the story it’s important to verify information) before we make conclusions.

Police will monitor videos and sources at the scene and hear from people who were there to determine what caused the confrontation. Police action can take place if the inquiry is ongoing and any offence is found to have been committed.

The Mazgaon incident comes at a time when Mumbai is preparing for public activities associated with Ganesh celebrations. Organisers and authorities generally stress discipline in the procession process and avoid doing so that conflict will be present.

For residents and devotees the immediate priority is to keep religious activities, and not to put tension in the way, as that is what officials and community representatives need to do.

The incident shows how quickly a disturbance in a crowd of people at a busy religious procession can become a wider public order issue.

Until authorities give a whole story, claims appearing on social media should be treated with care and any wrongdoing that has been confirmed will be probed with due legal process.
