The violence erupted in the heart of Chikkamagaluru, where a group of young people fought in a street fight on the busy IG Road at night. Photographs on mobile phones have raised fears of public safety and law and order in one of the city’s busiest areas.
Witnesses said the fight occurred near the Government Bus Stand at IG Road, a busy road that still has its busy life at night. Several young men who stopped their motorcycles in the middle of the road and battled back and forth were charged with a heated battle, which got violent at an explosive speed.
First reports suggest that the clash may have started because of a very small dispute. But the reason behind the fight is not clear at this point. What started as a verbal argument soon turned into a physical fight, drawing the attention of passersby and residents.
Local videos show the youths punching, kicking and attacking each other in the middle of the road. In one particularly disturbing scene, a young man is knocked to the ground before the group of people around him begins to kick and stamp on him.
Witnesses said the attack left many stunned. The victim was struck in the mouth while he was lying in the road, they said, and investigators were worried about how severe the injuries he might have received. Residents of this city are worried about the rising number of youth violence in public places, they say.
The fight disrupted traffic flow on IG Road briefly as motorists stopped to avoid the commotion. Pedestrians and shopkeepers tried to intervene, but others stayed away as they worried the situation might escalate.
The incident was recorded by many bystanders on their phones, and videos have been posted on social media. In both cases, the visuals have generated strong responses from the public on how such a violent altercation could occur on a major city road, instead of an instant response from the city to the situation.
Residents in the neighbourhood said the incident triggered fear because it took place in a prominent public place. Innocent people would have been hurt, or even killed, if violence spread, they feared.
Police officials will review the viral video and gather information from witnesses to identify the suspects involved in the fight. CCTV footage from nearby establishments may also be used to identify the sequence of events and what exactly happened.
Law enforcement experts say that trivial disputes can escalate to dangerous ones when tempers flare, and groups get involved. Conflict resolution, responsible behaviour in public places and quick response to settle disputes are all needed to prevent minor disputes from growing into dangerous confrontations, they say.
Residents are concerned about public order issues and what young people do. Residents and others are calling on the government to increase police presence in the city’s busiest places (especially late at night) to deter such incidents and ensure the safety of residents and the public.
The viral footage, however, serves as an eye-opening reminder of just how quickly the smallest dispute can turn into a violent display of violence, and of how a community that has not experienced such violence before is driven to action to keep peace and security in the city’s streets.
