The Shutdown Details: Why and When?

The decision comes after growing concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the road leading from the Mandalpatti Gate to the Forest Department office. The stretch has become nearly inaccessible, even for heavy-duty 4WD jeeps, making the journey hazardous for visitors.

Important Dates & Timings

  • Start Date: The maintenance work is expected to commence on February 15, 2026.
  • Duration: The restriction will remain in place for approximately 10 days.
  • Status: During this period, the Mandalpatti Gate will be closed, and all entry for private vehicles and trekking will be strictly prohibited.

Scope of Maintenance Work

The Forest Department aims to transform the rugged path into a more sustainable and safer route.

  • Stone Laying: The department plans to install stone slabs (paving) to prevent soil erosion and provide better traction for vehicles.
  • Safety Upgrades: Following recent complaints of tourist exploitation and safety concerns, the department is also re-evaluating entry timings and jeep regulations.
  • New Guidelines: Post-maintenance, the department will announce specific time slots and updated vehicle rules on their official website.

New Regulations for Jeep Rides

In addition to the road repairs, the Mandalpatti Jeep Owners' and Drivers' Association has agreed to new administrative guidelines to ensure a better experience for tourists once the site reopens:

  • Fixed Fare: The rate for a jeep ride from Madikeri to Mandalpatti has been capped at ₹2,500.
  • Viewing Time: Tourists must be allowed at least 1 hour at the viewpoint before the return journey.
  • Registered Vehicles: Only jeeps with a police-issued "number" and yellow-board registration will be permitted to ferry passengers.
  • Entry Fee: A standard entry fee of ₹50 per vehicle is applicable at the forest gate.

Advice for Travelers

If you are traveling to Kodagu during the last two weeks of February:

  1. Alternative Spots: Consider visiting Abbey Falls, Raja Seat, or Dubare Elephant Camp while Mandalpatti is closed.
  2. Check Before You Go: Verify with local homestay owners or the Madikeri Forest Office before heading toward the viewpoint to avoid a wasted trip.
  3. Plan for March: The hills are expected to be fully accessible with improved road conditions by February 25, 2026.
