Mohammad Shami has found himself in the political limelight after meeting the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary in Delhi. A picture of the meeting was shared on social media and talk of the fast bowler entering politics ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls was raised.
There has been no official announcement from Shami that he is going to join politics or that he will run in elections. Instead, the development has been referred to as speculation following his meeting with the RLD leader.
ABP Live reported that Shami will not be contesting from Amroha and that he has not made a decision to enter electoral politics.
As Shami is associated with Amroha in western Uttar Pradesh, the meeting is so important to Amroha. Amroha Sadar could be a constituency if Shami or a member of Shami's family enters the electoral contest there are rumours that this could be so. Shami's brother Haseeb Ahmad is also in the news in recent weeks.
The recent development has resulted in two possible scenarios in political circles: Shami himself could consider making an official political debut, or the family could be involved in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections. At present neither one of those has been openly confirmed.
Shami has been asked before about entering politics. In April 2026 he was asked about a political career and did not entirely rule it out and he said that his immediate focus was on cricket and would answer if he went to politics.
The timing of the Jayant Chaudhary meeting has attracted more attention because political activity is already growing ahead of the 2027 UP Assembly elections.
The RLD has always been a major political force in western Uttar Pradesh and any meeting between its leadership and a prominent politician from Amroha is a matter of public interest.
At present, all we can see is that Shami’s meeting with Jayant Chaudhary has fuelled political speculation rather than political entry. Until Shami, his family or the RLD makes a formal announcement, reports of him contesting the Amroha seat should be treated as unconfirmed.
It does however call attention to the possibility of a cricket-to-politics transition which several Indian sports personalities have taken before. Will Shami eventually make that transition as preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections start in place
