A video in Madhya Pradesh is causing controversy after a fire truck was used to wash the car of BJP MLA Ram Niwas Shah.
The footage, which appears to have been taken in the Bilauji area, shows two or three staff members directing high-pressure water from a fire truck into the MLA’s car. The vehicle sat outside a government bungalow.
The video was also criticized quickly by social media. Social media users asked why a vehicle set up for emergency firefighting was used for a private purpose.
There is also a fight for VIP access and government resources in this case.
What happened in Bilauji?
The video shows the fire truck parked near the government bungalow where the MLA's car was stationed.
Two or three staff can be seen using the truck's high-pressure water system to clean the vehicle.
Fire trucks are mainly used to respond to fires and other rescue operations. Life and property are at stake, so the equipment can deliver a massive amount of water quickly.
So the idea of such a vehicle being used to wash a private car has attracted attention.
Social media users criticized the whole thing as a waste of public resources, which were used to benefit an elected representative.
Opposition leaders also faulted the fire truck and said emergency resources should be available when they are actually needed.
The incident has been particularly controversial because fire services can be under extreme pressure in the case of disasters and delays in deploying a vehicle can be catastrophic.
But the video itself does not establish who authorised the use of the fire truck and whether the MLA personally requested it.
Those questions will have to be answered by the authorities.

Opposition has questions about how we use public resources
Now questions are being raised about whether the incident broke municipal regulations concerning municipal resources.
Opposition leaders cited provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, saying government equipment and services should not be used for private purposes.
Not only is the alleged car washing a concern, but also the treatment of VIP guests.
Public officials and elected representatives often have access to government facilities and security arrangements due to their positions. Such access should not be allowed to the personal use of emergency equipment, say critics.
The municipal commissioner, Savita Pradhan, who was there, declined to comment on the incident, the newspaper reported.
The MLA, Ram Niwas Shah, could not be contacted for comment on the video, so questions about the content of the video have so far been unanswered.
The absence of any immediate explanation has only fed the debate on social media.
If the fire truck was indeed used for washing the vehicle without proper authorisation, authorities may need to determine who ordered the deployment and whether any rules were violated.
They might also need to establish whether the fire service was needed elsewhere at the time.
At this time, there is no confirmed information that a fire truck was unavailable for an emergency as a result of the incident.
But the controversy is just one of many aspects of how government resources are being deployed.
Fire services are funded to protect the public and respond to emergencies. Their vehicles, equipment and personnel are expected to be ready for whatever can happen without warning.
Using such resources outside emergency circumstances, if confirmed, could also raise legitimate questions of accountability.
The video also revived criticism of VIP culture in the media, with social media users asking whether elected representatives should get special treatment from government departments.
But the issue is really a matter of how residents can best access public resources.
A fire truck is a specialist emergency vehicle, not a regular water tanker or car washing facility. Any use outside its intended purpose should therefore have a clear justification and proper authorisation.
Authorities have yet to give a detailed explanation of what happened.
Until now, the video has been at the center of growing political and public debate on Madhya Pradesh’s alleged misuse of emergency resources and VIP privileges.
