Many parts of Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka were inundated by heavy rains on Tuesday, with many areas flooded in the last few days, and residents were affected. The biggest impact was felt at the Adi Subrahmanya Temple in Kukke Subrahmanya, where floodwaters crossed the river and reached the temple after the Darpana Teertha River became swollen due to torrential rains.
Subrahmanya got 76.8 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours (8 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Monday), and nearby Sullia received 77 mm of rain during the same time frame. Torrential rain in the area has caused water levels in rivers and streams to rise quickly throughout the region.
As the Darpana Teertha River was overflowing beyond the banks, floodwaters flooded into the Adi Subrahmanya Temple, and devotees suffered a lot when darshan was going on. Due to the high flow of water, all the temple visitors were asked to stay in the temple and in higher places till the situation was better. Temple authorities and local officials were aware of the situation, and they were monitoring the safety of pilgrims and residents very carefully.

Residents described the flooding as “unprecedented” and said they had never experienced such a powerful flood in the Darpana Teertha River. The flooding in the area has made people fear changing weather patterns and the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events in the Western Ghats region.
The heavy rains caused damage to residential houses in several villages. The floodwaters flooded Prasanna Bhat and Shekhar Bhat’s houses in Noochila village and caused damage to household items and hardship for both families. In Kallapane, there was a collapse of a compound wall of Subbamma due to waterlogging and soil erosion. Part of a house was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

The rains had a huge impact on Kukke Subrahmanya too, and water levels in the major rivers of the district were high. At Bantwal, the Netravathi River was flowing at 5.950 meters and at Uppinangady at 25.8 meters. The water level of the Kumaradhara River was 79.585 meters, indicative of the widespread impact of the heavy rain all over the district.
The authorities are closely monitoring river levels as the continuing rainfall may increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas. Residents living near riverbanks and vulnerable areas should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local disaster management teams.
A bridge at Punchathar, within the Kaniyooru Gram Panchayat limits, has been submerged in heavy rainfall and water levels in the area are rising fast. The submerged bridge has raised concerns about connectivity in the affected area.
With further heavy rainfall forecast for coastal Karnataka, district officials have urged residents to exercise caution, avoid walking into flooded areas, and stay updated through official weather advisories. Emergency response teams remain on standby as the district faces an increasing threat of flooding due to persistent monsoon activity.
