Deepening heavy rain and strong winds have disrupted daily life in Karnataka’s Malnad region, and the government has declared a holiday for Anganwadis and primary schools in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district.
The precautionary measure has been taken to protect young children as the region remains in a bad weather condition and forecasts are predicting that the weather will get wetter for the next day.
Holiday announced as a precaution
The local administration announced that all Anganwadi centres and primary schools in Mudigere taluk will remain closed due to the present weather conditions.
The school officials said the decision was made due to the safety of students, teachers, and school staff in areas where waterlogging, falling trees, and landslides caused by heavy rain and gusty winds were common.
Heavy Rain Continues Across Malnad
Several regions in Malnad have received heavy rainfall for the past few days. Heavy showers and strong winds have been in force in other parts of Malnad as well as the heavy rains and strong winds have caused road accidents and the transportation and daily life in many villages and towns to be affected by heavy showers and the weather conditions in the region have been affected.
Some areas have reported trees being uprooted, poles being damaged, and power supplies to some areas being interrupted. The weather emergency teams are monitoring the situation in advance, and local authorities have put emergency teams on the ground.
Advisory Issued to Residents
The district administration has recommended against travel during the time of heavy rainfall and not to go out for a long distance at all.
Residents in landslide-prone and low-lying areas have been instructed to stay alert and to report any soil erosion, flooding, or damage to public infrastructure as soon as possible.
Motorists have also been told to be careful, particularly on hilly roads where visibility and slippery conditions pose additional risks.
The Weather Department predicts more rain is expected to come.
According to weather forecasts, many districts in the Western Ghats and Malnad belt in Karnataka are likely to continue to receive moderate to heavy rainfall in the next few days.
The weather situation is also being closely monitored by authorities, and more advisories or school holidays could be issued if conditions deteriorate.
Public Safety Remains the Priority
With a southwest monsoon still active throughout Karnataka, public safety is the top priority for district officials, who have said public safety is the primary concern of the district. They are taking precautions to avoid hazards from heavy rainfall, for example, by monitoring the region's rivers, reservoirs, and vulnerable locations.
Parents should stay updated with official announcements from the district administration and educational authorities regarding any changes in school schedules.
As the Malnad region continues to experience heavy rain, citizens are advised to follow safety precautions, cooperate with local authorities, and avoid going into flooded or landslide-prone areas unless necessary.
