A shocking murder in Mumbai’s suburban railway network has sparked outrage after 22-year-old Mayank Lohar was stabbed to death following a dispute over whether the doors of a packed local train should remain open during heavy rainfall. Mayank’s grieving family is calling for the death penalty (which would be enforced by the legal system) to compensate for their loss.
Mayank’s sister spoke out about her family’s anguish after the incident and pleaded for the most severe legal action against the accused. “We want justice. The punishment should be the death penalty. I lost everything, so the punishment should be death,” she said as she wept for her brother’s tragic death.
Argument Turns Fatal
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident took place on Tuesday night around 10:50 pm in the first-class compartment of the Churchgate–Nallasopara fast local train when it was moving between Andheri and Borivali stations.
Police said passengers argued over whether the train doors should remain open or closed as heavy rainwater was coming into the compartment. A verbal argument turned violent when the accused, identified as Sachin Ramesh Suvarna (30), allegedly used a sharp weapon and stabbed Mayank in the chest and abdomen multiple times.
The injured youth collapsed inside the coach as horrified passengers watched. The accused jumped off the moving train near Borivali before it stopped and fled the scene, investigators say.
Emergency Response
Whenever the train reached Borivali station, personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) rushed to the compartment after receiving information about the incident.
Mayank was immediately taken to the station's emergency medical facility before being transferred to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him dead despite efforts to save him.
Videos taken shortly after the incident showed the aftermath inside the coach and circulated widely on social media and raised public concern about passenger safety on Mumbai's suburban railway network.
Massive CCTV Hunt Leads to Arrest
After the murder, railway police launched an intensive investigation by forming seven special investigation teams consisting of officers from different railway police stations and the Western Railway Crime Branch.
Investigators reviewed footage from more than 400 CCTV cameras installed at railway stations including Borivali, Andheri, Mira Road, and Nallasopara, as well as surveillance cameras covering nearby roads and entry and exit points.
As a result of CCTV evidence and intelligence from the police, the suspect was identified as Sachin Ramesh Suvarna, a resident of Mira Road East.
Police arrested him from the Panvel area of Navi Mumbai within 24 hours of the incident.
According to investigators, the accused returned home after the incident and informed his father he had been involved in an altercation on a local train. He feared arrest and left home around midnight to escape Mumbai before police found him.
The murder weapon has not yet been recovered, and the accused is in police custody for questioning as the investigation continues, officials said.
There is renewed concern over passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, which is one of the world’s busiest commuter networks, carrying millions of passengers every day.
This is the second fatal stabbing on the Western Railway suburban network this year. In February, a college lecturer was allegedly killed during an altercation while trying to get off a train at Malad station, and there were similar concerns about violence in crowded coaches.
The recent tragedy has made public safety agencies more worried than ever, so increased police presence, better surveillance, quicker emergency response, and greater public awareness about conflict resolution on crowded trains are required.

Family Seeks Justice
Family and friends grieving for their loved one were crying for the young man, and the family is asking the authorities to bring the young man’s case forward very quickly through the judicial system. They also asked for greater security measures to avoid similar incidents on local trains in Mumbai.
Investigators continue to collect evidence, recover the alleged weapon, and record testimony from witnesses before filing the charge sheet. The charges, trial, and sentence if the accused is eventually convicted will then be determined in the legal process.
Mayank Lohar’s tragic death has again brought attention to the need for improved passenger safety and effective law enforcement on one of India’s busiest public transport networks, while leaving a family grieving the loss of a young life cut short in a moment of violence.
