Police now have arrested her husband Ramanujan Goswami after he surrendered and confessed to the crime. Forensic examination is on in case of a possible link between the death and the claims made during interview.

Riya Talukdar was a resident of Guwahati’s Noonmati and had worked at a boutique in the AC Market area of Fancy Bazaar. Ramanujan Goswami, her husband, is a cab or Uber driver from Gauripur in Assam’s Dhubri district. The couple was married for around six months and lived together in a flat in the Hatigaon area.

The case came to light after concerns were raised about the couple and a foul smell was reportedly noticed coming from the residence. Police went to the flat and found Riya’s body. They also found evidence of the crime and took the body to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. Forensic teams have been examining the residence as part of the investigation.

As reported by several news sources, Ramanujan was a prime suspect after he had to leave the residence after an argument with Riya, police sources said. He later surrendered to Hatigaon police station and admitted to killing his wife. Police have said that his account is being verified and an investigation is ongoing to establish the sequence of events in the case.

Investigators are investigating whether suspicion of an alleged relationship between Riya and Ramanujan may have led to the dispute, the newspaper said. The motive and circumstances are still being investigated and the accused, the police said, should not be taken as facts independently from the facts at this point. Forensic evidence, witness testimony and other material from the residence might help to describe what happened.

The reported nature of the crime has shocked Guwahati as the couple had only been married for a short time in Guwahati. Neighbours and those who knew the couple are being questioned by the investigators who wish to know what happened before the alleged killing happened. Residents reported hearing a disturbance around the time the alleged killing took place but investigators are not sure what exactly happened.

Police have also recovered a weapon from the residence, reports said. Forensic and investigation teams are looking for evidence of involvement in the crime. Riya's death will be studied thoroughly and the post-mortem will shed light on the cause and manner of death.

The case has also taught us that violence can result in suspicion and conflict in relationships. But investigators have yet to establish a full motive and the involvement of an alleged affair remains part of the police investigation, not a sure shot answer to the killing.

Riya’s death has left questions about what happened at the couple’s home and what led to the fatal confrontation. Police will question Ramanujan further and will hear from neighbours and relatives and anyone connected with the couple.

With the investigation going on, authorities will have to work out the exact sequence and what evidence can be presented in court. The accused’s reported confession will also be assessed along with forensic and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

The Guwahati murder case has once again illustrated the terrible consequences domestic disputes and possessive or suspicious behaviour can have. The investigation is still on, but people are finding out the truth to Riya Talukdar’s death and to its aftermath so that the case can be fully investigated through proper legal mechanisms.
