A violent scuffle in Mumbai’s suburban local train caused two passengers to be injured as commuters scrambled to escape on Wednesday and police said commuter safety on one of the world’s busiest railway networks was at stake. Both people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are believed to be in stable condition, railway officials said.
The fight started in the middle of the day when the train was full of office-goers and daily commuters, witnesses say.
Passengers tried to intervene and separate the two people but the situation deteriorated and the train staff and fellow commuters were able to control it. The injured passengers sustained injuries during the scuffle and were immediately treated for it when the train arrived at the next train station.
The GRP and RPF arrived on the scene soon after receiving information from the train station, officials said. Both injured passengers were taken to a hospital located at the site for treatment, and investigators started recording statements from eyewitnesses and other commuters who were present at the time of the incident.
Police have registered a case and started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fight. CCTV footage from railway stations will also be reviewed and evidence collected to see how the clash happened. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the findings of the investigation.

Mumbai’s suburban railway network is the city’s lifeline and brings millions of passengers to the city every day. People fight with the system, especially in the rush hour, over boarding, seating, and accidental pushing. Authorities have advised passengers to keep calm and avoid disturbances while traveling.
Commuters have called for more staff in the Railway Protection Force on trains during peak hours to ensure a visible security presence for safety at stations and on trains.
The safety of passengers is of the utmost priority for railway staff and officials told us that we should report any suspicious activity or aggressive behaviour to the railway authorities, station staff or the railway security helpline. There are also awareness campaigns for responsible behavior on trains.
The incident is just one more reminder of the challenges Mumbai’s suburban rail network faces, where huge daily passenger numbers call for better infrastructure and more public cooperation. Authorities have appealed to passengers to be patient, respect fellow commuters, and resolve disagreements peacefully.
The investigation is ongoing and officials will respond to questions and all the evidence after a thorough investigation is done.
