A shocking case of alleged child sexual assault has come from Mumbai where a security guard was arrested for allegedly assaulting a young child inside the washroom of a residential complex.
Residents of the housing society have been angry about the incident and concern about child safety is mounting, they say.
According to police, the accused, who had been working at the residential complex as a security guard, lured the child into a washroom before attacking him. The child told his family about what happened, the police said. The family immediately went to the local police station, where a case was filed.
Police officers were quick and arrested the accused after the family’s complaint was recorded. The suspect has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The child has been provided with medical help and counseling as part of the investigation process,” said the police.
Investigators are collecting evidence, including CCTV footage from the residential premises, and interviewing witnesses to establish the sequence of events.
The accused will be taken to a court where police will ask for custody to conduct further investigation, he said.
The incident has left residents of the housing society incredibly disturbed. Many expressed concern about the background verification of staff who work in residential buildings and demanded better security protocols.
Residents’ associations will also be reviewing surveillance and access control systems to address the situation in a more proactive manner in order to prevent a repeat.
These incidents are one more example of how children need to be educated in their own safety as well as to communicate with their parents or guardians about their safety, child rights experts say.
They also stress that, in addition to background checks of all employees who are working in proximity to children, security personnel, housekeeping employees, and maintenance staff must be done regularly.
The POCSO Act has provided strong legal protection for children against sexual crimes and there are child-friendly procedures in place for investigation and trial. Law enforcement agencies have underlined the importance of minors and that all cases will be handled with extreme care and legal action will be taken against the offenders.

Parents and child welfare organizations have urged schools, residential societies, and community groups to conduct awareness sessions on child safety. Parents should teach their children about safe and unsafe touch, call out uncomfortable situations immediately and tell them they will be heard and not to worry or blame, experts say.
As the investigation continues, police have appealed to the public to avoid sharing the identity or any information that could reveal the identity of the child, as it is prohibited under Indian law. Any information related to the case should be made available to investigators.
We have seen that this kind of action is very bad and has not been reported so far. Police have promised that there is going to be a full investigation and justice will be done in accordance with the law.
