Mysuru Dasara 2026 will have a coastal Karnataka flavor, with the traditional sport of Kambala expected to be one of the main attractions of this year's celebrations. Preparations are underway to bring the popular buffalo race to Dasara festivities in Mysuru.
The world-famous Mysuru Dasara attracts tourists from all over India and abroad every year with its royal heritage, cultural activities, Jambo Savari, palace events, food festivals and sporting activities. Adding Kambala would add to the celebration’s scale and give visitors the chance to witness the unique culture of Karnataka’s traditional sports in one of the most distinctive traditional games.
More than 120 pairs of buffaloes are expected to take part in the Kambala event. Preparations for the buffaloes' training are due to start from September 15, and the team of trainers for the buffaloes is also working on the special track for the competition preparations.
Kambala Track Preparations Underway
A proper track will be essential for conducting a Kambala competition. A good racing track is planned for Mysuru, and the quality of the soil, water management, and overall arrangements are being studied by the organisers to make it a good track in Mysuru.
Kambala takes place in specially prepared muddy tracks filled with water. The buffaloes race through the wet track while being guided by Kambala jockeys.
Because the proposed Mysuru event is expected to attract a large audience, arrangements for spectators and safety will also be important. The track will have to be suitable for the participating buffaloes, and there will be sufficient safety measures around the racing area.
Training to Begin From September 15
The buffaloes in Kambala are not just brought to the track on the day of the competition. They are trained and prepared for the track in preparation and in cooperation with their handlers for racing.
According to the preparations for the Mysuru event, training will begin from September 15. Practice runs will help the buffaloes to gain knowledge of the track conditions and allow the Kambala jockeys to prepare for the competition.
