Narendra Modi welcomed the country on National Handloom Day and expressed his gratitude to the country for the outstanding handloom heritage of India, and weavers and skilled artisans who are working with great passion and hard work to make this day a holiday. As a sign of how deeply cultural it is, the Prime Minister said the government will continue to support handloom development which is one of the major pillars of rural upliftment, women empowerment and the national vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Modi also said that weavers and artisans have been working hard for generations to maintain and enrich Indian traditions through the generations to be able to keep and develop these traditional crafts and have been working on their craft and for generations weavers and artisans have been doing so with the most beautiful skills and creativity and dedication to the Indian people and culture of the country through their talent, creativity and dedication to the job and their love.
Based on those sentiments he is therefore calling on citizens from all walks of life to take advantage of the upcoming National Day to take part in our country’s efforts by displaying their favourite handloom products and posting some good handloom products and videos in the form of “Get Ready With Me” on digital media using #NationalHandloomDay. Prime Minister Modi said that this public engagement would help the people working on handloom and the handloom sector and the people making them craft more beautiful and develop their craft on a bigger scale.

The Prime Minister’s appeal followed a video message posted on his Instagram account in which he explicitly urged the public to buy indigenous handloom products and make promotional videos to draw in the world’s attention. In that message, he said the day to celebrate is an economic boon and a helping hand to the country’s hardworking weavers and small-scale traders. And Prime Minister Modi also recalled the historical significance of the date and said that here’s a historic moment, the date of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905 that took place on 7 August of 1905 for the first time and brought together the whole country and put people of any country together to support the local industry and self-reliance.
The Prime Minister asked the people of India to embrace this historical legacy with happiness and to make the rich array of Indian handlooms available to the world. He drew a parallel to recent festivities - as Friendship Day is celebrated with great fanfare, National Handloom Day should be celebrated with the same spirit and public spirit. If people consciously purchase handloom goods and share good digital content, it will be of direct benefit to local artisan communities and small traders that India will continue to have such wonderful textile traditions for generations to come.
