A major food safety operation in Navi Mumbai has unearthed an alleged milk adulteration racket and officials seized and subsequently destroyed 4,710 litres of adulterated or suspected adulterated milk during a raid at Mahape MIDC. Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials found material and products which raised serious concerns about the quality and authenticity of milk being processed or handled at the premises.
And the raid has also brought home the increasing awareness about adulteration of milk and the risk it carries for consumers. Milk is one of the main food products that all people eat - children and senior citizens among others - so quality control and food safety are important. The large amount of milk seized in the Navi Mumbai operation also shows the size of adulteration that can happen with milk in the supply chain.
According to officials, milk is diluted with skimmed milk powder (SMP) and chilled water. Such practices can alter the composition and characteristics of milk and may allow operators to increase the overall volume of the product. The exact nature and extent of the adulteration is under investigation as well as who is involved in the operation.
During the inspection, FDA officials also seized other dairy-related materials, including paneer, skimmed milk powder and cream, according to the Journal. Such products have added an additional dimension to the investigation as investigators have yet to determine if they were to be used in the alleged operation, or were related to the distribution and processing of dairy products.
Following the seizure, the 4,710 litres of adulterated or suspected adulterated milk were destroyed by authorities. The destruction was to prevent the seized product from entering the market and reaching consumers. Food safety authorities regularly take such measures when products are considered unsafe, adulterated or otherwise unsuitable for human consumption, subject to the applicable regulatory process.
An FIR has been registered against 15 persons and entities for the same case too. The registration of the criminal complaint means the matter will now be further investigated, including the supply chain, procurement of raw materials, processing practices and the distribution network of the seized dairy products, and the possible distribution network of the dairy products.
The incident comes at a time of increasing concern in India of food adulteration. Milk and milk products are particularly susceptible to fraud due to the high demand and wide network of distribution channels in India. To identify products that do not meet food safety and quality standards, government inspectors and sampling drives are regularly conducted.
For consumers, the Navi Mumbai case is a reminder of the importance of purchasing milk and dairy products from reliable and properly regulated sources. Consumers cannot independently verify each aspect of the production process, but reviewing packaging information, manufacturing information and regulatory markings will minimize the risk of purchasing questionable products.
The FDA’s action at Mahape MIDC will put greater scrutiny on dairy-processing and distribution activities in the region. It is possible to determine how long the alleged activity has been taking place, in what order the milk was to be supplied and whether other individuals or businesses had been involved.

As per the government’s review, the seizure of thousands of litres of milk and the filing of an FIR against 15 people and entities show the seriousness with which food adulteration allegations are being treated. As investigators work through the investigation, more details will be available about this suspected operation and products that are being used, and if any action is taken against those who may be responsible.
So the Navi Mumbai raid is a major food safety effort but also a reminder of the fact that inspections will need to be carried out regularly and enforcement will need to be maintained so that we do not get customers to sell adulterated dairy products.
