A tragic New York shooting has taken the life of a young Indian national from Punjab and brought grief to family members in Punjab and concern to the Indian diaspora in the United States. Gurdeep Singh, 27, a native of Jabowal village in Punjab’s Kapurthala district, was shot to death after delivering pizza on August 21 in Brooklyn’s East New York neighbourhood.
Gurdeep Singh had lived in New York for almost a decade. Like many immigrants seeking better opportunities abroad, he worked hard to support his family back in India. Singh had been doing his regular pizza delivery around Stanley Avenue in East New York when he was getting into a dispute over payment, family said. When he asked for money after delivering the order, the customer didn’t pay and shot Singh dead, they said. Local authorities have launched an investigation and are trying to find and arrest those involved.
The tragic news has left Singh’s family in shock. Speaking to media outlets, his father Pyare Lal pleaded to Indian and American authorities for justice to be served, telling reporters his son had moved to New York about eight to nine years ago for work and a better life. Describing the financial strain the family has in India, he pleaded to the government to bring his son back home to India and put a hold on the culprits for the killing. The sad father of a child who was delivering a package to a stranger said he never thought a simple delivery job would end in such a tragic loss.

The Consulate General of India in New York confirmed the incident and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved family. Indian diplomatic officials say they are closely communicating with the local authorities and are extending all kinds of help to the victim’s relatives. The consulate is helping with documentation, coordination with law enforcement agencies, and the repatriation process, so that Gurdeep Singh’s remains can be brought back to Punjab as soon as possible.
The tragedy has raised a lot of concern from the South Asian community in New York. Community organisations and Punjabi association leaders spoke out about the safety concerns faced by delivery workers, ride-share drivers, and other workers who work late-night shifts in urban areas. Many said immigrants are often employed in jobs that require them to travel through different neighbourhoods at odd hours and so are at high risk for crime and violence.
Some community advocates have suggested that police be more visible in high-crime areas and that street lighting and security measures be improved in commercial districts in Brooklyn. Punjab politicians are calling for the Ministry of External Affairs to help the family in this difficult time.
We do hope that Gurdeep Singh’s family will get justice and the criminals will be caught and those responsible for the crime will be punished. The crime has once again brought home the dangers faced by immigrant workers abroad and has reignited discussion about workplace safety, community safety, and support for overseas Indians looking to make a better future.
