The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27 has opened its application window for fresh and renewal candidates. If there is eligibility criteria and this is a student, they can apply online through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) on or before August 31, 2026.
The NMMSS scheme was launched by the Ministry of Education to provide financial aid to academically minded students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarship supports students to continue their education after class 8 and decreases dropout rates at the secondary school level.
Under the scheme, selected students receive ₹12,000 per year and this money is transferred directly into their bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The financial support is available from Class 9 to Class 12, provided students meet the renewal requirements each academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
Fresh applications are for students entering Class 9 who have passed the NMMSS examination for their states or Union Territories. The scholarship is available for students studying in government, government-aided, and local body schools.
Students already receiving benefits under the scheme and currently studying in Classes 10, 11, or 12 must submit renewal applications to continue receiving the scholarship. Renewal is subject to fulfilling the academic performance criteria specified by the authorities.
A key feature of the current academic session is that eligible students can receive one merit-based scholarship together with one or more welfare-based scholarships as long as they satisfy the eligibility requirements of each scheme.
Application Process
Applicants must first sign up for the One-Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal.
Once they have done so, they can log in with their credentials, choose the NMMSS scheme, fill out the application, put in all the necessary personal and academic information, upload the documents, and submit the application online.
Students are advised not to wait until the last days of the application period as there may be heavy traffic on the portal that could lead to delays or technical issues. Completing the application process well before the deadline will help avoid last-minute problems.
Verification Timeline
Once the applications are submitted, they will be verified at different levels of administration. Educational institutions are expected to complete institute-level verification by September 15, 2026, while district and state authorities are scheduled to finish the verification process by September 30, 2026.
If an application is to be accepted, all details should be thoroughly reviewed before final submission to avoid mistakes during the application process that could delay or affect the scholarship application.
Because there is no extension to the application deadline, eligible students are encouraged to complete the process before August 31, 2026.
