State-owned power giant NTPC Ltd. has approved an investment of ₹20,456.7 crore to expand the Lara Super Thermal Power Project in Chhattisgarh in another step towards building India's electricity generation capacity.
The approved expansion will provide a total of 1,600 MW of generation capacity with two new 800 MW thermal power plants. The project will make a significant contribution to meeting the nation’s increasing demand for electricity driven by rapidly increasing economic growth, industrial growth, urbanization and household consumption.
Strengthening India's Power Infrastructure
Lara Super Thermal Power Project is one of NTPC's key power generation facilities. With the installation of two new 800 MW units, the plant's capacity will increase, and operational efficiency will be enhanced with modern thermal power technology.
The investment also demonstrates NTPC's ongoing investment in the power sector of India to ensure the reliable supply of electricity for all sectors of the country. As India's economy is expanding, electricity demand is increasing at an ever-increasing rate in industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, and capacity additions are required for the long-term energy security of India.
Supporting Rising Electricity Demand
India has enjoyed sustained growth in electricity consumption over the past couple of years, driven by manufacturing expansion, infrastructure development, digitalization, and growing electrification of rural and urban areas.
A new power generation facility at the Lara project will meet demand peaks and also support grid stability. Those plants will also supply enough power to industries, businesses, agriculture and homes.
Though India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy resource base, thermal power continues to play an important role in the supply of stable base load electricity to the national grid.
Boost for Chhattisgarh and the economy
The expansion project will also generate significant economic activity in Chhattisgarh. Large infrastructure projects of this scale typically create employment opportunities during construction and operational phases and support local industries, transportation networks, and ancillary services.
The project could also strengthen the state’s place as one of India’s important energy-producing regions.
NTPC's Long-Term Growth Strategy
As India's largest power generation company, NTPC has been keeping a balance between conventional and renewable energy development with a view to growing its conventional and renewable power generation capacity in parallel. In a balanced fashion, with investments in solar, wind, hydro and green hydrogen, NTPC is also keeping up to date and improving thermal power generation to maintain its generation capacity to generate electricity.
The approval of the ₹20,456.7 crore investment means that NTPC is committed to meeting India’s growing energy needs and the need for high-capacity supercritical units to enhance generation efficiency.
Looking Ahead
The addition at the Lara Super Thermal Power Project for 1,600 MW will also boost India’s power generation system and contribute to long-term energy security. Once the two new 800 MW units are fully developed, they will help to plug the gap in electricity demand and to help to propel the economy.
The project also aligns with India’s larger goal of having reliable, affordable and sufficient electricity, and to continue to expand clean energy capacity as well.
