PM Modi Assam Visit 2025: Guwahati Airport Terminal & Namrup Project Launch

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a momentous two-day visit to Assam on December 20 and 21, 2025. This visit, valued at over ₹15,600 crore in developmental projects, is anchored by the inauguration of India’s first nature-themed airport terminal in Guwahati. Described by the Prime Minister as a significant boost to the state's infrastructure, the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport is designed to enhance "Ease of Living" while serving as a catalyst for regional commerce and tourism.

The centerpiece of the trip is the ₹4,000 crore Integrated Terminal Building, a sprawling 1.4 lakh square-meter facility themed "Bamboo Orchids." The terminal uniquely blends Assam's biodiversity with modern architecture, utilizing 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced bamboo and featuring 57 orchid-inspired columns. Travelers will experience an immersive "Sky Forest" housing nearly one lakh indigenous plants, alongside cutting-edge technology such as DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, AI-driven operations, and full-body scanners. The upgrades extend to the airfield, with improvements to the runway and taxiways to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister will begin his visit by unveiling an 80-foot-tall statue of Assam’s first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bardoloi, sculpted by the renowned artist Ram Sutar. Following a walkthrough of the new terminal, he is scheduled to address a public gathering and participate in a roadshow toward the BJP headquarters. The day’s events underscore the Prime Minister’s vision for Assam as a key growth engine for India’s "Act East" policy.

Sunday’s itinerary shifts toward heritage and industrial self-reliance. PM Modi will pay a historic tribute to the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement at the newly inaugurated Swahid Smarak Kshetra. He will garland the statue of the first martyr, Khargeswar Talukdar, and visit the martyrs' gallery. This visit is seen as a deeply symbolic gesture, honoring the six-year-long struggle to protect the state's identity. Additionally, he will interact with students aboard a cruise ship on the Brahmaputra River as part of his 'Pariksha pe Charcha' initiative.

The visit will conclude in Namrup, Dibrugarh, where the Prime Minister will perform the 'Bhoomi Pujan' for a ₹12,000 crore Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project. Developed by the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited, this brownfield complex aims to produce 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea annually. This project is a major step toward "Aatmanirbharta" (self-reliance), designed to fulfill the fertilizer needs of the Northeast and eastern India while significantly reducing the nation's import dependence.
