Atmanirbhar Bharat has been a central policy message of the Modi government, focusing on domestic production, supply chains, innovation, infrastructure development and less reliance on imports in strategically important areas.
The demand for self-reliance is at a time when disruption in global supply chains has shown the dangers of over-reliance on external markets. India is increasingly developing domestic production capabilities in the areas of electronics and automobiles, defence, pharmaceuticals and advanced technology. Higher domestic capacity can potentially enhance economic resilience while creating opportunities for investment and employment.
The 7.8% growth figure is therefore understood by the government as more than just an economic statistic. It is for the Prime Minister the ability of the country to continue growing despite geopolitical uncertainty, global conflicts and supply-chain challenges.
