Narendra Modi declared his optimism ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, saying that he hopes the session will be useful, productive, constructive, and good for the nation. Speaking to the media before the start of the session.
Modi said that meaningful discussions, healthy debates, open exchanges, and joint decision-making among people's representatives are needed so that the country and its people will become the focus of Parliament.
The Monsoon Session will be filled with discussions of a variety of important legislative proposals, government programs, policies, economic development, social welfare measures, and national issues on their immediate and long-term policy agenda. Parliament is the highest democratic forum in which elected representatives decide on issues that will shape the country’s governance, development, and future policy direction.
Prime Minister Modi said Parliament is, in fact, a forum of engagement and called on political parties to work together to help the nation. The government has confidence that people from all sides of the political spectrum will engage in discussions and contribute positively toward strengthening India’s democratic institutions, he said.
The Prime Minister said healthy debate and discussion are central to parliamentary democracy. He added that differing perspectives are essential to discussion and debate, and the various views are important in Parliament and will help in forming better policies that make sense for the citizens of the country. He also noted that Parliament must work well so that important legislative business can get done on time.
The Monsoon Session will also come at a time when the government is expected to introduce and discuss several major Bills and policy measures. Parliament will also likely raise issues of the economy, agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, national security, technology, environmental sustainability, and social welfare during debates and Question Hour.
Apart from legislative business, Parliament also allows elected representatives to seek accountability from the executive in the form of discussions, questions, committee reports, and policy reviews. Parliamentary proceedings are crucial to transparency as well as democratic governance as they provide an opportunity for citizens to be fully informed of government decisions and public policy.
Narendra Modi said the government's primary focus is to ensure that the welfare and development of citizens of India are at the core of the government's job as a whole. He expressed hope that the session would lead to real results that contribute to the development of India and the people in different regions and communities.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that consensus is essential for a successful democracy.
